About 15 years ago I worked for the Alberta Forest Service. We'd get thunderstorms in May with a bit of rain and by June we'd be in drought conditions with everybody on high alert for fire season.
We've had torrential rain for the past week. I've got water in my basement for the first time since I've owned the house - about 25 years. Another neighbour is flooded. The back alley has 6 inches of water in it.
I understand you guys are having a record heat wave. is going on?

(54,378 posts)And, as Marvin Gaye sang, you have whats goin on.
Maybe, in the near future, that old ancient Roman conception of the aqueduct will be brought back into vogue. Then all we have to do is make them Tornado-proof (good luck).

(113,302 posts)We would love it here if you would share your rain. We are in megadrought.
2nd year for this la nina , it was expected to fade instead of strengthen.
Last time it was like this was 2011. Central US was flooded badly that year.
We'd gladly take the rain back, but you have to arrange for shipping.

Wonder if they're working on 6-week-to-harvest crops.

(32,822 posts)The farmers are probably furious. They need rain later in the year. It's sun they need right now.
I put a few raspberry bushes in that have since taken over the yard. I thought they were the quick harvest type. They said I could get two crops out of them. If we have an early winter like I'm expecting I'll be lucky to get anything off them.

(58,785 posts)we haven't had severe drought for a few years (it'll return); but the seasons are so messed up, with winter often seeming to skip spring to turn into summer, then more freezes, etc, that timing for bloom and berries that don't give up altogether is often very off. Migrating birds and insects miss their usuals altogether. The large butterfly bush outside our kitchen window is in full bloom without a single butterfly appearing so far.

(4,440 posts)and I'm still waiting for a few days of no rain so I can put the new roof on. I'd also like to get the kayaks onto the lake at the state park a few miles away, but every time my wife and I clear our schedules it rains.

When trade winds blow faster near the Pacific Equitorial Dateline area it cause a cooling of the those tropical waters. Meanwhile there is warming of water in the Pacific NW. Warm water causes rain. Cold water causes drought. Also certain wind patterns come into play. When the winds slow down those tropical waters warm up and rain begins along with SW US. The opposite occurs in the Atlantic.
Keep in mind winds blow in opposite directions in the tropics than at mid latitudes...Tropics goes from E to W. Mid-latitudes W-E
Where I live in South Texas our summer winds are tropical, but winter winds are W-E..
Most of the US weather moves from West to East during the summer.
