https://www.ft.com/content/2e667c3f-954d-49fa-8024-2c869789e32fWith an eye on the likely coming reversal of Roe vs Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that enshrined womens right to abortion, I ask Clinton how far such unfinished business is likely to go. If you go down the rabbit hole of far right intellectuals, you see that birth control, gay marriage all of it is at risk, she replies.
What is the Christian rights endgame, I ask. Presumably they would not be able to create the theological dystopia depicted in Margaret Atwoods 1985 novel The Handmaids Tale? My question triggers a passionate response. Clinton speaks about how some states will make it illegal to abort after rape and incest if Roe vs Wade is overturned. One state and this is hard even to speak about, she says would require the woman to get the permission of her rapist before aborting. Others plan to criminalise women who have the procedure in states where it is legal.
The level of insidious rulemaking to further oppress women almost knows no end, Clinton says. You look at this and how could you not but think that Margaret Atwood was a prophet? Shes not just a brilliant writer, she was a prophet. Clinton adds that when she was a senator, she voted against the confirmation of Samuel Alito, one of this courts most conservative judges. I found Alito was the kind of young man who when he was at Princeton railed against coeducation, railed against letting women into the eating clubs, and that was all in the background that I read, she recalls. He honestly struck me as one of those very self-righteous types seeking to remake society.
. . .
My espresso has arrived. Clinton asks for more iced tea. I cannot allow the lunch to end without questioning the direction of her party. I say that Democrats seem to be going out of their way to lose elections by elevating activist causes, notably the transgender debate, which are relevant only to a small minority. What sense does it make to depict JK Rowling as a fascist? To my surprise, Clinton shares the premise of my question.
We are standing on the precipice of losing our democracy, and everything that everybody else cares about then goes out the window, she says. Look, the most important thing is to win the next election. The alternative is so frightening that whatever does not help you win should not be a priority.

(46,775 posts)Clintons, but when it came down to talking to us about what the right was up to, Hillary was spot on, everytime.
Right-wing conspiracy, plantation mentality, deplorables. All of it.

(1,383 posts)Would the petrol execs take a profit cut, not a salary cut, to lower gas prices if a fascist was in office? I say, YES.
Did Biden cut domestic energy production? No, he did not. He increased it. Yet, here we are.
The country is in serious trouble. So, the most qualified candidate to run for President in the HISTORY of the United States and I are in agreement.
Cheers anyway!

(3,507 posts)Its been so obvious that the GOP has been headed down the road to fascism for decades and now that theyre just about to get it, the alarms are finally going off. Its almost certainly too late, the pieces are in place, the districts are stacked, they have the courts, theyve changed the laws.
Kudos to the esteemed Secretary for speaking out, shes been right about everything about these MAGA turds from the door but we should have been on this for thirty years.

(7,447 posts)because of "woke" issues and we aren't going to lose in 22, if we lose, because of "woke" issues.
We will lose, if we lose, because of inflation, plain and simple. We will lose, if we lose, if the death of Roe and the failure of fun control, again, don't lead to people turning out.
But this whole scapegoating "wokeness" is nonsense. No one who would vote Dem is switching to Rep because of TG issues or something some blue checkmark twitter person got upset about.
To quote her husband, it's the economy stupid.

(1,962 posts)I know some frustrated Democrats that feel things are going too slowly, Democrats "don't fight hard enough", and are irate that Drumpf is still a free man. But not a single one of them has thrown a fit because "woke" issues or "gay" issues or "trans" issues.
Some people still want to push the myth that if the Democrats "reach across the aisle" and "quit being so woke" it'll attract "more voters" from the middle, like libertarians. Truthfully, there's only two ways to win them other. Either go Republican Lite (no thank you) or legalize marijuana. Give them their pot (we know the QOP won't) and a lot of them may vote Democrat, regardless of how they feel about "culture wars."
The only person who claims they've gone from Democrat to Republiqan in 2022 is Elon Musk. I say "claims" to because he's so dishonest he could be triplets. I wouldn't be surprised if he's always voted Republiqan myself.
So... No, the Democrats are not in trouble over standing for human rights. Besides, somehow has to, because the QOP is now the "party" of death.

The author (no, I don't know who it is and can't pull it up on the website) is a twit. Probably transphobic, certainly stupid. We didn't start the fucking war over trans issues. The QOP did. We're not "going out of our way to lose elections" by standing for human rights. Spare me the concern-trolling and quisling shit, author. And if the party isn't going to stand in support of our most vulnerable groups - no matter "how small" a minority - then what's the point?
The dumbfuck author here needs a refresher course in "First they came for..."
