Cover of the New Yorker - June 2022

To highlight Juneteenth, I was commissioned by the New Yorker to illustrate the cover! The words of historian Mitch Kachun can resonate with all of us that day: “celebrations of the end of slavery should have three goals: to celebrate, to educate, and to agitate.”

I've read and heard audio of an early "blues" melody that was similar to a Muslim call to prayer. TeamProg Jun 2022 #8

Besides the excessive use of white cotton?

Most unfortunate is that this pretty picture is NOT how things worked out for a large majority of former slaves. The musical instruments should be maybe a washboard, washtub string bass and a box-type banjo.

Is the artist attempting to convey the obvious cruelty of inequality, ya think?!?!

Other than that, I'm not sure how early court music or Haydn or Mozart or Stravinsky were influenced by a Muslin call to prayer.

Old story, not sure where the audio link went:::

If you watched the signing ceremony, Joe kneels in front of her to talk and also hands her the first signing pen.

She is an awesome woman

Today I was out walking my dog around the neighborhood and I encountered someone I've come to know. She is a black woman in her 20's and could see she was heading to a celebration. For some reason I forgot it was father's day and mentioned how happy I was the Juneteenth was recognized as a national holiday. Her reply was, "yeah, homosexuals should have equal rights".

Did she notice that my jaw dropped to the ground? Doubtful, but when you question how some of our lawmakers ever get elected and why our country has been overtaken by the tragically uninformed, remember this.

Not so much the message. Agitation is a mindless anger eventually in the hands of a radical zealot. Images that agitate use the same logic as firearms: images provoking anger aren’t the the problem, anger-provoking images are a beneficial tool safely used by everyone.

Sorry, I’m a peacenik on race relations and think we need to give peace a chance. And than means disarm the white agitators—that’s what we want, not create an equal army of black agitators. An eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth leaves a society filled with blind and toothless people.

Happy Juneteenth, it’s about time.

I'd only quibble with the size of the stringed instrument meant to be a violin (I guess) it actually looks like a large viola, or mini cello.

but my vision is not the greatest either.
