Thought this is a fitting OP for Juneteenth 'remembering'. Native Americans also have a heritage worth remembering.
We saw this on our travels to the Dakotas last summer. It is truly stunning. It is on the bank of a river, believe the Missouri. The view is also awesome.
The colors of the statue change hue depending on the lighting conditions - it really is a piece of art worth seeing. A really great tribute to The Sioux.

(8,052 posts)to go to the Missouri River overlook--was always a nice place to take a break and let my young boys run around. I'm guessing that's where this is? Will have to check it out on my next journey there.

It appears in a lot of "best things to do in SD" type lists. It's more than deserving.

(7,263 posts)Of coarse, I got into a shouting match with some TFG supporters at the Rushmore viewing area (near the ampitheater), so my attitude was not good.
We also stopped and saw the Crazy Horse Memorial - a work in progress, and were much impressed with it too.

(1,046 posts)My thoughts exactly. More artistic heart felt feelings went into this
work of art than the four faces. Just beautiful. By the way how is
the Crazy Horse sculpture progressing ?

was back in the day and it's doubtful that dichotomy could happen now. I love SD and ND. Even NE. Traveling on state and county roads away from the cities is absolute heaven to me.

There is a new book out by April White, called "The Divorce Colony: How Women Revolutionized Marriage". One can read a bit about it on the atlas obscura website.

(10,429 posts)first time I'd driven through SD since the 80's. It was a complete coincidence that I planned to stop at that rest area and walk the dog. That statue was new and jaw-droppingly beautiful. It was an unexpected great surprise.
The river overlook is the perfect site for it. It's well worth the stop to walk around the paths and see the statue up close.
