Russian journalist sells Nobel Prize for Ukrainian children

NEW YORK (AP) — What’s the price of peace?

That question could be partially answered Monday night when Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov auctions off his Nobel Peace Prize medal. The proceeds will go directly to UNICEF in its efforts to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine.

Muratov, awarded the gold medal in October 2021, helped found the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and was the publication’s editor-in-chief when it shut down in March amid the Kremlin’s clampdown on journalists and public dissent in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It was Muratov’s idea to auction off his prize, having already announced he was donating the accompanying $500,000 cash award to charity. The idea of the donation, he said, “is to give the children refugees a chance for a future.”

4. The bid for the medal is already up to $787,500

The Auctioneer, Heritage Auctions of Dallas, is donating 100% of its buyer's fee as well, in other words putting on the auction at their own expense, donating their time and publicity. Unsuccessful bidders are being encouraged to donate as well at the event.

Vladimir will not be pleased.

7. That left all expectations in the dust

Heritage Auctions was floored with their mouths agape. I am fairly close to some of their top people. Since they waived ALL fees (usually a percentage of the price realized), I hope they get a lot of good will out of this. I'll bet they have a friend for life in Muratov. This is a world record by a factor of over ten, and has to be the biggest private donation to the Ukrainian cause by far.

Kudos to not only the winning bidder, but to the losing bidder right below the winning bidder!
