"Wait his turn" as an agument doesn't make a lot of sense if you're backing Warren. She's actually kind of my dream candidate, too, but I don't think she's exactly entitled to the gig.

Smart money would be on Cuomo, by the way, assuming Clinton & Biden both don't jump in. But the reality is, it's nobody's "turn" on our side of the fence. Dems always win when we nominate 40-somethings (Well, Carter was 50, but he was a youthful 50) without a lot of time logged in DC. That's probably not demographic destiny, of course. But it's interesting that we're always on our best game when we go for some kind of Bobby-surrogate. Warren's so fresh & different, she might just be the next Bobby we've been waiting for.

I assume you know who I mean by "Bobby".

Julian Castro is an admirable figure who made a great speech at the Convention. But before I commit to him in four years, I'd probably want to see some signs of electability in a Statewide race, rather than just a local municipality.

I remember reading about Bill Clinton being "one to watch" in the late seventies. He was viewed as Presidential timber way back when.

Castro will get his turn--might take ten or twenty years, but if he sticks to his principles he'll get a shot. A "President Castro" would be amusing on so many levels! I hope I live long enough to see the GOP's insinuating ads~~!!

but, he lost me at "so I could hold this microphone instead of a mop." There are lots of people pushing mops who may not have had the same opportunities. They work hard for their families or to put themselves through school, etc... flaunting privilege gained and the luck\opportunity to rise above circumstances comes off a a little arrogant and disdainful.
There are a lot of people who are as smart as he is and are still pushing a mop.

There are certain people who, even if Obama was to be the second coming, are still mad that St. Hillary did not get crowned. I myself am uncertain, she does some things wonderfully, but she is a war hawk that migth be too eager to cement her legacy the way Meir and thatcher did, kill a lot of brown people. However, if she wants it, she has it...it is just a matter of her veep.

I know that his speech at the Dem Conv was supposed to be the second coming of Obama in '04, but I really just didn't feel it. Yes, he's got a great life story, and a lot of potential. But I'm not seeing that presidential "thing" yet.

Next prez needs to be a woman, if you can find one named Castro that would be cool. Because as someone upstream noted, having a "President Castro" would really make the batshit hit the fan.

40. Demographics in TX (key is the youth) -
Thu Nov 1, 2012, 09:29 AM
Nov 2012

An article from Kos early this year that lays it out. 2016 is likely too soon for Julian - a race for Governor or being selected as a potential VP candidate would be more likely. But this is definitely good news for anyone who looks at Texas and thinks "hopeless". In fact sometimes I feel that way! But the youth here may turn the tide to blue ... just give them 15 years. Julian is 38. It's unreasonable to look at him as a strong candidate for 2016, but the possibility is there down the road.

Projecting Texas: The coming Democratic plurality
Mon Jul 30, 2012 at 07:11 AM PDT

First, a little bit of background on Texas demographics. As of the 2010 census, the state was about 45% white, 38% hispanic, 11% black, and 6% other, mostly Asian. That's compared to 53/32/11/4 in 2000. State's getting less white, more hispanic. But you knew that ...

Okay, there you go. If this diary is offering a prediction, this is it. And what this prediction says is that Texas ought to be on the cusp of competitiveness by 2024 - and, though the numbers don't go this far out, it's clear that the state ought to have a gen-u-ine Dem+ PVI by 2028. A slight one, but still.
