8. Oh MAN, have I really been screaming about that - for that long?

FORTY YEARS of limbaugh - who really broke the ice and led the way for all the rest of the vermin epidemic including all those listed. And I don't know who I want to scream at most at this point: Republicans - who schemed and seeded this in multiple ways, from media ownership to talent development, or Democrats - who either may have noticed something but didn't think it was all that big a deal, or just slept through the whole thing.

I don't know who's at bigger fault here.

The first time I heard limbaugh, my thought was "OY, here's trouble..." Back when I was still working on the radio, I remember telling friends that this worried me and that I suspected it could be the beginning of something really bad cuz this guy was glib and compelling to listen to, and listeners could really be taken in. And nobody else seemed all that bothered about it or took it as a serious threat. NOBODY.

And NOBODY actively supported a counter-push from Air America - which was about all we had back then, to argue the opposite points and push back on limbaugh & co. They had the airwaves pretty much to themselves - and when Air America folded, they had the whole ballgame to themselves, especially since owners could stack the deck at the local level with limbaugh clones of all shapes and sizes.

Pandora's box was opened. And the lid had soon been pried off, completely, and thrown away. And by now, it's been allowed to metastasize into a cancer that is now actively threatening to kill our democracy.

I have to work a lot harder to be hopeful these days.

And all too soon, it wasn't just him. He sprouted clones and me-too's and other opportunistic infections all over the airwaves.

Back when I was just getting started in radio, there was Joe Pine and Ray Briem - and many of us just laughed at them because they were cartoon-conservatives. That crank Ray Briem ended every show with "Don't give up the Panama Canal!" Just real eye-rollers like that. Calling them cranks was kind. What they actually were: demon seeds. They begat a guy like limbaugh. And he quite literally TOOK it from there.

Seems like stations in larger Midwest towns and cities could try programming with some of these. Broadcast them out to the two stoplight towns and farms. It would be worth a try with stations already ratings challenged. We could even gofundme seed some of them?

Rachel Maddow got a big boost from there, though. So it wasn’t a total loss. And Thom Hartmann had a vehicle for awhile, too.

but I totally agree.

My mother was a JFK democrat. She called the republicans the party of big money & said that democrats better represented working class people. Then in her fifties she got a (blue collar) job where they listened to Limbaugh all afternoon, every afternoon, & in about 18 months she was a changed person. Angry, filled with hate toward minorities & uppity women because they were the ones ruining America. That's how I was introduced to Rush Limbaugh & I thought the same thing you did—this isn't going to be good.

We should have hired George Lakoff when he published "Don't Think of an Elephant," but it's too late now. The repubs have more successfully defined our side than we have. Tax & spend democrats. Weak on immigration democrats. Socialists. Baby killers. And our side is like crickets.

What the hell is the matter with them? And WHY don’t they get how MASSIVELY important MESSAGING is?????

Sorry. My dad was a salesman. I grew up with sloganeering and salesmanship. May seem trivial and “eeeuw, shouldn’t we be above such things?” But the answer is “NO!” And not just a simple “no,” but a NO, DAMMIT!!!

Dammit! I ache with frustration about this! I’ve been tearing my hair for years about this! WHEN are the Dems gonna wake up and smell the coffee on this?????? The bad guys are good at it. REALLY good at it. And they’ve been spending their time and money building delivery systems for it also. And while they’ve been busy as bees, building this infrastructure, OUR team has been asleep! And IF they’re awake they’re busy turning their noses up at the whole idea and rolling their eyeballs at how low-brow and pedestrian it is. They just don’t get it!

WHEN will they start getting it?????

But - IS it too late? I don’t think so. But we Dems better jump on this with both feet, right NOW. NOT just think about it or talk about it or consider it. Actually GET IN there and DO it.

I Live in Meadows/Cawthorn district. Guns ring out around the Mtns all day everyday. I have to play it low volume sitting on my porch or in the back yard. I can counter with Charlie Daniels’ “Long Haired country boy” or, Skynards “Mississippi Kid” about guns or their “God and Guns”. Actually will not play that shut song.) If those don’t stop the shootin at me I can do my acoustic version of Free Bird. Damn….if that don’t work, guess I will just do John Prine, “Please don’t Bury me in the cold cold ground”.
