on Biden's watch? TFG did say that if he were POTUS Putin wouldn't have done it. Just another sicker way to help the orange idiot return to power?

(12,286 posts)I think the timeline was to invade in late 2020 but along came Covid and pushed back Putins plans.
Had he done that trump would have backed Russia and we wouldnt have sent any weapons to Ukraine.
It is entirely a hunch of mine. Based on nothing but speculation.

(2,357 posts)too). My hunch is Putin enjoyed TFG threatening to leave NATO. Wouldn't be surprised to learn someday that both of them have been steadily in touch after the election and Putin is murdering thousands of Ukrainians just to get the bastage back in office so he can clear the deck to damage NATO and proceed to take back all the old USSR territory. Wouldn't normally wish anybody to be seriously ill, but Putin is one exception.

Putin thought he could take advantage of the weakened state that Trump left our country and NATO in, but he was wrong. Tens of thousands of dead Russian soldiers, a Russian economy in the worst state since the collapse of the U.S.S.R, etc. Boy, was he wrong.

If Trump were president, there would be no obstacle.

Take it or leave it, makes no difference to me. It's just one of the myriad of suppositions, any of which might be right--or perhaps several, or perhaps none.

(12,640 posts)Covid - the Russians had to get over the hunker down stage of the pandemic.
Trump losing - there was no rush if Trump was still in the big chair in the Oval Office. Trump was on track to weaken NATO so much that Putin wouldn't worry about "Western cultural encroachment". His people in Ukraine were already working to delegitimizing the idea of democracy as they have been throughout the West.
The continuation of the populist Nationalism or "Traditionalism" in Europe. Hungary, Poland, Brexit, to name a few counties - all aimed at separating and isolating cultural groups and putting pressure on lower and middle classes by pushing the idea that those "others" are taking away their jobs, rights and privileges.
Finally, he had to wait until he got China and India "solidly" in his corner.
I'm pretty sure he was going to wait until after the Olympics anyway. Just so he could pretend being a strong, respected leader to his people, upholding "Russian Pride" for them in the face of those nasty Westerners.
