Traci Arway, a special education coordinator within the public school system in Columbus, Ohio, has had nightmares about having guns in her classroom.
Arway works in multiple different schools across the district, helping students with special needs, and her nightmare has just become closer to reality, she said.
Earlier this week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine passed a law that makes it easier for teachers to carry guns within schools. House Bill 99 reduces the hours of training required for teachers to carry guns from 700 to less than 24.

I am having a hard time connecting the dots of how arming untrained people are going to keep people safe," Arway said.

I think very, very, few teachers are going to go along with this.

The object is to sell more guns.

(4,583 posts)First of all, the unhinged RWers likes to howl about grooming: This is grooming kids to accept gun culture, to normalize seeing the people you interact with daily at school carrying a sidearm. I have been a teacher going on 28 years. Guns are not at all what school or teachers should be about. The idea disgusts me, to put it mildly. I'm not sure how the RWNJs expect schools to carry out this terrible plan. Will these guns be locked up in classroom closets, or will certain teachers have a visible sidearm at all times? Seeing your teacher armed cannot be a good thing for young kids in particular. It turns what should be a nurturing and calm space, free of violence, into a space that implies potential violence. Intruder drills are bad enough, but seeing armed teachers would be a constant reminder to kids that schools get shot up on occasion and their school could be next. We started having a part-time resource officer at our school last year, and I am O.K. with having a police officer in the building. He has an office at the front of the building, is low-key about his presence. I hate that it has come to this, but at least it is a societal norm seeing an armed police officer. However, I was not O.K. with seeing him called in to help quell emotional outbursts from the students in the classroom where our emotionally disturbed students are sent when they became unmanageable in their homerooms. The news has provided us with plenty of stories about cops who abused their authority and their firearms, and you can be sure that if this plan goes into effect we will hear about teachers in similar circumstances. The idea that we should arm teachers is an indictment of how awful our society is becoming. Also, I find it curious that arming teachers is the main focus of these malignant RWNJs. We've had mass shootings in grocery stores, and at a Wal-Mart. Why are they not suggesting arming store managers, cashiers and stockers?
