snip-"Woods suffered “comminuted open fractures” to both the upper and lower portions of his tibia and fibula in his right leg, as well as damage to the ankle bones and trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg, according to an update released via his social-media account on Tuesday night. A comminuted fracture is when a bone breaks into more than two pieces, and an open fracture suggests bone broke the skin.

As part of the procedure, Woods’ right leg was stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Screws and pins were used to stabilize the bones in the foot and ankle. A surgical release of the covering of the muscle was also performed to relieve pressure due to swelling."

His leg was messed up pretty badly.

Golf does not require the physical fitness requirements of most other sports. Now, if a soccer player, for example, made a recovery like that, that would be impressive.

Because of Tiger, fitness is a gigantic part of tournament golf today.
Even guys that don't look like they could run a 10k, have finely toned muscles and high levels of developed fast twitch fibers.
That's the biggest reason why the average distance with a given club has gone up nearly 30 yards in the last 25 years, but for the typical recreational golfer it's only gone up about 2.
It's not the equipment. If it were, every golfer would be hitting it 10-15% farther.
Also, the hand-eye coordination and exceptional balance it takes to be a world class golfer are both very high requirements.
The "golfers aren't athletes" thing is mostly silliness spouted by people looking for something to criticize.
