Hundreds of people have been forced from their homes and tens of thousands of acres have been burned through by wildfires across Spain, with global climate experts warning that nearly the entire country is at risk of facing the flames."Nearly all the country faces extreme fire risk Friday as a result of the heatwave and drought" Spain and much of Europe is experiencing, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported Friday, noting that a Saharan dust cloud that's drifted north toward the continent may also have an impact on public health.
...
Roughly 61,000 acres of land in the northwestern province of Zamora had been destroyed by the wildfires as of Sunday and several Spanish cities reported temperatures topping 104°F in recent days.

This is a runaway train. Don't think anything can stop it now.
So for those of you in the western US saying you still have water coming out of your faucet and this is just chicken little alarmism, get ready for a severe wake-up call.

(25,816 posts)So not "almost all of Spain is on fire", not even one percent. Yes, it is true that most of Spain is
very dry. I live in Az and we have lost more acres this year than 61,000.

(1,032 posts)Spain is not the desert southwestern US. Very different climate and a vastly smaller more densely populated area so this is extreme news.

(36,389 posts)I would also suggest large parts of Monterey has a Mediterranean climate, just like large swaths of Spain. Densely populated? I'd mention the Tubbs fire and the destruction the city of Santa Rosa experienced, but that one was ONLY a 36,807 acres fire.

(1,032 posts)California, Nevada, Arizona, etc. have large areas that are not as populated as Spain is per square mile of the region. Of course I'm aware of the devastation to cities and even wine country in CA.
You're doing a good job of diverting attention from the story. I admitted my mistake. Can anyone tell me how one changes their thread title?

(1,032 posts)A Heretic I Am explained it in another post so I changed it.
For some reason I wasn't able to change it when I first tried.
Brenda
(1,032 posts)Okay, it's not all on fire but the experts say with the drought and the excessive temps that "nearly the entire country is at risk of facing the flames."
Spain is not Arizona. Are you in a contest to see who has the worst fires and heat?

(1,032 posts)I will try that.
It worked and I'm grateful to you for explaining it to me.

(1,823 posts)The northwest part of the country, Galicia and Basque Country has fires right now (the entire regions of course are not on fire but there are multiple fires right now, especially in the Navarre region)

(1,823 posts)Im not sure what point you are trying to make here but I politely pointed out you misinterpreted the map you were sharing and were misrepresenting what it says- not all that difficult to do since its an untranslated version. Those of us with personal interests though in Galicia have been following developments over the last few days and are of course concerned about whats happening- much the way Americans on the west coast are this time of year when wildfires ignite.

(1,032 posts)Just made a mistake and I corrected it in another post above. I'm not able to correct the title of my thread.
But your response along with the others sounded very dismissive. I apologize for my remark and have removed it.

(22,340 posts)but the fact remains we are in serious trouble with climate change
It is so disheartening to see it in a place like this. It makes me realize how many people are still in denial which is kinda shocking.
