(4,436 posts)Germany should be a major power- it is economically the leader there- and Germany needs to increase its military preparedness, as well as giving more heavy weapons.

(6,544 posts)both internally and externally. They then became essentially dependent fully on the US for protection. Since the Cold War ended, few of the European countries have really armed up, expecting that interaction and investment would prevent Russia from being, well, Russia. Bad decision in hindsight, but we are where we are now, at least they are finally stepping up, even though it's taken a lot of pressure.

(9,249 posts)The IRIS-T SL (Surface Launched) is a new, mobile, medium-range surface-to-air guided missile designed and developed by Diehl BGT Defence to meet future medium-range air defence needs of the German Air Force.
The new missile is effective against all types of aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided weapons, air-to-surface missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-radar rockets and large-calibre rockets. It also has high probability of kill against unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned combat aerial vehicles and other small manoeuvring threats at very-short and medium-range distances.

(54,378 posts)Stop and think where Germany was 90 years ago, or even 80 years ago. After World War II, Germany vowed to never again be involved in a war. They joined NATO and re-armed at our behest, but basically they are now the pacifist nation that their neighbors hoped they would finally become. Yes, they need to make their decisions quicker, but lets not have them get too high on weapons again. No one wants to give them a chance to re-acquire a taste for using them.

(10,052 posts)have not sent yet. There is something going on their and I think it is the relationship with the new chancellor and Putin. Scholz has a pretty shady past and couple that with the previous chancellor before Merkle, Schroeder who is on the board for Russian oil pipeline, Nordstream. I am extremely unimpressed with the stalling that has gone on with Germany.

(6,526 posts)Hindsight is always better; wasn't everyone reassured that Putin would not invade Ukraine?
Also, let's ask Turkey why they want to deny Sweden and Finland membership in NATO. That's a bigger problem, IMO.
