If they think this stuff could stick to Johnson and scare away voters, SOP would be to replace him on the ticket. Wisconsin's one of the few states that don't allow the governor to appoint a replacement-- they have to have a special election (not sure what happens if it's really close to the general election). So then, with a special election happening hot on the heels of a scandal, the question becomes whether it's worth the risk of losing the incumbency for November or whether it's better to not have Johnson around while another republican runs for his seat.
I'd rather be in our position than theirs right now.
