Cutting the federal gas tax and encouraging states to cut their gas tax
Its a world wide problem.. It may not be much.. but he has an idea.. what's everyone's alternate idea??? all you jingoists on the right.. what is your idea?? At least Pres. Biden is willing to get out of the car and start pushing this stalled vehicle off the highway.. everyone else seems more than willing to stay sitting in the car and bitch about how Biden is doing nothing..

(1,823 posts)Itll save the average American $16.56 over a 90 day period.
Much better is the anti-gouging bill democrats in the house passed. Unfortunately republicans will probably kill it in the senate- but that would have led to real results that would impact Americans pocketbooks in a meaningful way.
Im not going to waste my time defending a bill that is essentially toothless, that in the end will actually negatively impact democrats. What do you think happens in three months when the tax holiday expires, right before the elections anyway?
Instead Im going to write my senators and tell them to act on Katie Porters bill and Im going to point out to everyone who will listen that Republicans are the ones blocking it and keeping gas prices high.

(1,823 posts)Forget the fact we actually use those tax dollars to fund Highway projects and more- the bigger issue as I said is timing. While Americans wont feel much of any impact from a tax holiday, theyll imagine they feel it in reverse when it expires in October. Then itll be the Biden gas tax being added, just in time for mid terms.
Its just not a financially beneficial plan, and its a politically foolish one.

(14,061 posts)But states also need to be on board. Indiana will hike its gas taxes in July and well be paying 61 cents per gallon. This is a record increase.
The Dems are pushing for a moratorium but so far, nope.
But we will be getting an extra $250 tax refund (which will go toward paying this gas tax).
Insane.

(455 posts)They must figure there is a new economic equilibrium, which does happen to bring them more profit.
The federal government should, however, redirect subsidies that would go to oil companies, using that money instead to fund fuel vouchers for the working poor and mass transit.

(5,526 posts)(which I wouldn't because I think infrastructure needs the funding)
But if I were, I would do it as a rebate.
That way, gas companies can't absorb the money by failing to match the price drop. And people know where it is coming from. And you could reserve it for private citizens and shut out corporations.
Otherwise, I think it is problematic for all the reasons mentioned above.

(412 posts)Think this is a bad move. In short term it looks good but will expire in September. What happens 2 months later. The midterms and a good portion of the people will think is Biden and Dems raised gas prices by 50 cents. Plus all the ads from GOP will be highlighting this and the electorate is not smart enough to figure it out. Only listen to the 30 second sound bite.
