Several Trump allies who sat for interviews with a British filmmaker were assured they had editorial input over the final product. But 17 months later, the footage has been turned over to the Jan. 6 committee.

Multiple people were told it was focused on Trump's legacy and would be a flattering portrayal, which could explain why Pence sat down with them six days after Jan. 6. It was all arranged by Jason Greenblatt, Trump's former Middle East peace envoy.

(CNN)Several of Donald Trump's closest allies sat for interviews during his final weeks in office with a British filmmaker after being assured they had editorial input over the final product, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Multiple people were told it was focused on Trump's legacy and would be a flattering portrayal.
But 17 months later, that filmmaker, Alex Holder, has been subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill insurrection, and turned over hours of his footage. That has made some in the former President's orbit nervous, they told CNN, mainly because several don't recall the full extent of their comments.

Holder's "Unprecedented" three-part docuseries about the 2020 election will be released on Discovery Plus, which is owned by CNN's parent company, later this summer. The documentary includes never-before-seen footage of the Trump family on the campaign trail and their reactions to the outcome of the election.

Several of the interviews, including with Ivanka Trump, were conducted after Trump had lost the election, but as he was still contesting it. Most of Ivanka Trump's interview focused on her relationship with her father, in addition to a public comment about the ongoing legal challenges over the election. Others, including Jared Kushner and then-Vice President Mike Pence, also sat down for interviews. Donald Trump Jr. sat down for an hour with Holder about three weeks before the election, another source said. They attempted to interview Donald Trump Jr. again but ultimately never did.

What the crew provided the house was raw footage and testimony over how it was captured.

It doesn't matter what the contract says, once a subpoena was issued, it superseded it. Which is likely why they told the committee they needed one.

Alex Holder @alexjholder

My statement in response to being subpoenaed by Congress:

So, the documentary is still going to air this summer. I wonder if that whole editorial approval thing still holds or if it all went poof.

The fact that Trump & Co. were promised editorial input means that they were most certainly expecting this documentary to be a puff piece -- they obviously wanted to create a fawning portrait of Trump's "legacy."

But of course in order to do that, the filmmaker needs to whittle down the raw footage through a long editing process that cuts out all the crap and only leaves in the parts they want to leave in.

Trump & Co. didn't expect that the raw footage would ever see the light of day -- and now it is.

Get yer popcorn ready!

But they wouldn't respond to subpoenas from the committee, or they relentlessly invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid incriminating themselves while under oath.

Wouldn't it be ironic, and hysterical, if Trump's desperate need for publicity and attention is the thing that brings him down.
