Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican of Wyoming whose polling remains far behind her Trump-endorsed primary challenger as her House committees Jan. 6 hearings continue, is urging Democrats in her home state to switch parties to support her in the Aug. 16 primary.
In the last week, Wyoming Democrats have received mail from Ms. Cheney's campaign with specific instructions on how to change their party affiliation to vote for her. Ms. Cheneys campaign website now has a link to a form for changing parties.
Joseph Barbuto, the chairman of the Wyoming Democratic Party, was among those who received Ms. Cheneys instructions. Mr. Barbuto said that over the last week, his social media feeds have been flooded with Democrats and only Democrats posting about receiving mailers from the Cheney campaign.
I havent had any Republicans share online or tell me that they received it, Mr. Barbuto said on Thursday.
Recruiting Democratic support has been a sensitive topic for Ms. Cheney since she voted to impeach former President Donald J. Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. She has cast her August primary contest with Harriet Hageman, who is allied with and endorsed by Mr. Trump, as a battle for the soul of the Republican Party. Recruiting Democrats to that fight could undermine those efforts.

(2,099 posts)I certainly would vote for her in the Republiklan primary. She's at least more honorable than the Ship of Fools that make up the GOP.
Then I would vote for anyone or anything with a D after their name in the general because they still would be better than any R

(2,494 posts)Just remember that she's still a warmongering, big-oil loving, pro-life GOPer. She made her mess, so she should convince her lot to vote for her.
What I do hope is that Democrats in Wyoming pick one of the three candidates in their primary:
Lynnette Grey Bull
Steven Helling
Meghan Jensen

(82,849 posts)But I think Rep. Cheney should get her own party in order before asking other people to do it for her. If she loses her primary, wouldn't that tell her that the Republican party no longer aligns with her?

(3,826 posts)GOP win a trumper sec of state etc. No way.
In the Fall, I'll vote for all Dems of course.

(3,621 posts)and according to the Wyoming Secretary of State's website, as of June 2022, the registered voters of Wyoming break down into the following party affiliations:
Constitution 754
Democratic 44,643
Libertarian 2,637
Republican 197,868
Unaffiliated 35,220
Other 31
In the last primary election held in a mid-term year (2018), there were 139,809 votes cast. So, even with every single Democrat re-registering as a Republican and voting, it doesn't seem like she could make up the difference. I especially think this is true since Trump himself will be driving the MAGAts to the polls for this primary.
Math never was my strongpoint, though, so feel free to check me on this.

(31,974 posts)In the 2018 election 106k Rs voted. If in 2022 similar numbers voted and she got 40% she would need about 20k of Ds to get to 50%. Is it possible? Yes, but difficult. Now if she gets more than 40% it becomes that much easier.
