Trump and his stooges must be punished: It's the way to save America
If one man is above the law, then America is done. The Jan. 6 committee is literally fighting for our future

And so it came to pass that in the Year of Our Lord 2022, logic and facts left the room and the Republican Party replaced them with "We've got lots of theories, we just don't have the evidence."
This is the postmodern world, devoid of reason and chock-full of stooges like Donald Trump, John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani. It is the world we were warned about by Michael Cohen in a 2020 Rolling Stone article: "I believe that he would even go so far as to start a war in order to prevent himself from being removed from office. My biggest fear is that there will not be a peaceful transition of power in 2020."
It is a world where Trump's allies in the Supreme Court have eroded the separation of church and state so thoroughly that in the near future we could be living in a fascist Christian state. Jack-booted thugs will roam free and anyone who does not present as a God-fearing white Christian heterosexual will have more to fear from the government thugs stomping your neck than from the vengeful God to whom the dimwitted believers pray.
The only thing standing in the way of this dystopian, dyspeptic destruction is the Jan. 6 hearings, and this week we found out in cinematic detail how members of that committee are trying to stave off the end of democracy.

(9,998 posts)The main thing keeping me from considering a move away from America in the near future, are my parents, who are in their 80's now.
But I do plan to look seriously in the next 2 years, at how to make it happen, because I only see things getting worse, and given how I feel about this country in the present, I don't think I can take what's certain to come in the next few years.

(6,686 posts)Americans might not be welcome elsewhere. The beacon on the hill is about to shoot itself in the foot.

(16,844 posts)I want to get out, but my parents are getting old and I don't want to leave them. I don't think it's going to be possible for me to stay, however, and I don't think we have two years. Things will deteriorate quickly when we have the elections this year. There are going to be these observers at the polls intimidating people and there will be challenges to the results all over the country. It's going to be a mess. I don't think we'll make it to 2024 without some major problems.

(9,998 posts)And now that the Supreme Court's direction seems fixed for perhaps the next 20-30 years, I see no sign that there is any hope. I think it's a very realistic scenario that we either end up with TFG again, or more likely DeSatan. Both are just mean and spiteful, and the fact that at least 45% of the country are guaranteed to vote for them, I just don't know how I can respect myself for living in a country that chooses to be led by excrement like them.
I want to live somewhere that the people are not so fucking selfish, that they refuse to wear masks, or get vaccinated, or give a shit about their fellow human beings.
I wish I had the tiniest bit of hope for America's future, but sadly, I do not. I feel embarrassed and ashamed to be an American.

(16,844 posts)We have done and still do great things. We're helping Ukraine a great deal right now. But this shit going on with our government is too scary, and the guns, and the religious people. I can easily see us at war with each other in the next year, and I live deep in the old Confederacy. I would be a fool to stay. This country has just made me weary. I hope I can start a new life someplace else.

(9,998 posts)With TFG and a repub Congress, it would just as easily be the Exact opposite.
Therein lies the problem. We can't occasionally be this wonderful country, and at other times despised by the decent countries of the world.

(16,844 posts)on a silver platter. Other countries probably look at us like people look at the big guy who is really nice sometimes, but sometimes gets drunk and wants to fight everybody. It's embarrassing, because people associate that national character with you, thinking that's part of your personality. Most Americans also have preconceptions about others based on appearance and nationality. Everybody wants to be seen as an individual, but they also want to belong. I guess I just don't feel like I belong here anymore. I've really grown past it.
