(21,447 posts)Erie is my home town, although I live in western NY now.
I have not lived in Erie for over 40 years, but when I was growing up there, it was a very Democratic city, but it was also predominantly Catholic and anti abortion.

(21,447 posts)on PA's northwestern border with NY. Pittsburgh is in southwestern PA, near the WVA border. Not near each other. McKean County is east of both Erie County and Warren County.
There is a county in PA called Bradford, but it also is on the NY/PA border, in the northeastern part of the state.

(7,263 posts)Not a native but been coming here for 30 years, living here for 22 of those.
Large majority of the folks around here in my neighborhood (working/middle mix) support a women's right to decide what is best for her, it's her body. Good percentage of 'progressive' Catholics, not so many Catholic radicals like the SC has.

(21,447 posts)I don't know the attitudes of Erie Catholics on abortion today. The suburban areas are probably pro choice. Don't know about residents inside the city. The Catholic colleges, churches, and cathedral, plus Catholic grade schools and high schools had a lot of influence over people's views when I last lived there. But, due to the Catholic Church's financial problems and families who can't afford tuition, some of those schools have closed.
Also, there used to be a lot of families of first generation Americans from Catholic countries. I think the influence on later generations might have diminished since then. But that's just speculation. I know that at the time of the Roe v Wade ruling in the 70s, there was a strong anti abortion attitude in Erie, led by the Catholic Church. Today I would think that Evangelicals have banded with them on abortion.

(3,166 posts)EVERY Dem candidate for House, Senate, and Governor should say this over and over again. Pound it home. Make the Republicans go on record on this. Hit them with it relentlessly.
This and the Jan. 6 hearings should motivate every Democrat in the country to vote this fall.

In Pennsylvania, the Governors pen will either protect abortion rights or eliminate them.
The stakes cant be any higher.
We MUST elect @JoshShapiroPA. He has been an absolute advocate of protecting abortion rights here in Pennsylvania.
There is too much on the line.

Our Republican Legislature will send a bill to our next Governors desk to ban abortion in Pennsylvania.
Without Roe, the only thing stopping them is the veto pen of our next Governor.

Doug Mastriano has pledged to sign that bill with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.
Doug Mastriano is dangerous. Help us defeat him in November.

(17,194 posts)Even if, mirable dictu, the Federal Legislature enacts a law making abortion legal in the whole country, a lawsuit could be filed claiming that it is not the place of the Feds to make such a law (and the Court has just established that it is the province of the States). I can't imagine that the Court, as it is presently constituted, would not gleefully uphold such a challenge.

(128,930 posts)Last I heard, WE "have" a majority-D State Supreme Court here in Pennsylvania that not only broke the gerrymandered Congressional map here in 2018 and got us 4 (D) seats (which was part of the "blue tsunami" that gave Democrats the House control again), but that same state Supreme Court decided on the 2020/2021 Congressional map that was basically the same as what they drew in 2018 minus one seat that we lost due to the census.
(P.S. and because the SCOTUS does "states rights", all the GOP nonsense cases fighting those maps in 2018 and 2020, were waved away by the SCOTUS)

(10,828 posts)Unike Oz who has changed his position to fit the extremist mold.
Shapiro will also defend Pennsylvania women and their right to safe, legal abortions.
Unlike Mastriano who supports the 'heartbeat' cut-off (a bogus timeline to begin with) and favors the ban pushed back to conception.
This is a clear choice for PA's electorate: women have been reduced to second-class status, their right to determine their own destiny stripped, removed, made illegal. Consider this: the right to carry a gun in public has been given a green-light while the right of women to make their own personal decisions has been eliminated. In addition, there's a future threat to contraception, as well as same-sex relationships and same-sex marriage.
The decisions of minority extremists cannot stand. Vote these suckers out, right down to dog catcher. March them all into the deep blue sea.
VOTE!

A woman's reproductive freedom is non-negotiable.
Dr. Oz said he would support a ban on abortion even in cases of rape or incest.
The stakes couldn't be higher for women in PA + across the country - and this isn't the end of attacks on our civil rights.

I just want to be really clear about something. Abortions will still happen whether it's illegal or not. The difference is that more women will die because they won't be safe, and it will fall hardest on poor women + women of color. We must fight this with everything weve got.
