It took conservatives 50 years and a lot of "engineering" at high levels of government to re-ban abortion. To them, it was worth the time and effort.
Gun rulings by SCOTUS this week will turn America into a violent, dystopian wasteland, like Mad Max.
It's time to start a repeal movement for the 2nd Amendment and hammer on it and apply similar engineering principles until we can get it gone. So what if it takes decades and one or two generations to do. It will be worth it.
Let's start now and make it a 30 year project.
The second amendment is the most misinterpreted and adulterated part of the constitution. "Clarification" won't fix our gun problem. Total repeal is the only way.

You seem to be unaware that many Democrats who support banning assault weapons and strengthening background checks are gun owners themselves and would never vote for this.
I am one of them.

(24,653 posts)We don't have a right to own a car enshrined in the Constitution, but I bet most Democrats own one without worrying it will be taken away. But they have to have a license and insurance to own and operate one. And can't use one below statutory age.
Repealing the second amendment would simply remove an impediment to rational debate and realistic regulatory legislation.
It needs to go.

Unfortunately, there aren't any.
It's viewed as a waste of time, effort and money.
Not to mention a risk to life and limb.

(5,557 posts)Yes yesterday's ruling is wrong from a legal standpoint and deeply disappointing. The changes to legal scrutiny also sets the stage for more challenges to come, and probably some state assault weapon and magazine laws being overnturned.
'will turn America into a violent, dystopian wasteland' is still an unhelpful, overdramatic exaggeration.
Prior to yesterday, 25 states already did not require permits to carry a gun. A further 16 are shall issue, the standard Thomas seems to want to force as a minimum. Yes, the statistics seem to suggest slightly higher crime in those states, but the evidence is weak and struggles to reach statistical significance - particularly when socio-economic factors are introduced as controls (the may issue states are all blue with higher incomes).
The places already allowing this are not war zones, this will not destroy society. But it does mean that likely some people will die that didn't have to.
Melodramatic statements that do not hold up to scrutiny are not helpful.

(6,544 posts)While I hate the 2A, you can't "repeal" it. It requires a Consitutional amendment to change, and that will never happen. Conflating that with abortion rights is a major step in the wrong direction, despite your good intentions. Focus on getting our side to the polls NOW, not some 30 year long dead end.
