I live in CA-48. My rep in the House is Republican Michelle Steel, elected in 2020. I expect that she'll be reelected in November.
In Democrat Harley Rouda, we had only a one-term respite from Dana Rohrabacher.
I'll give Steel the benefit of the doubt, in that I suppose she's probably earnest and sincere. But I abhor her politics.
If your representative is a Republican, please tell us about your experience with that person voting in your name. If you've ever written to or called your Republican representative, what did you write or say?
I'm a former legal secretary, and even before I embarked on that career, I was an inflexible proofreader. On May 9, Steel put out a press release in which she slightly misquoted Dr. King. Maybe I was just looking for something to be pissed at; I'll admit that. Still, I pounced. I wrote to Rep. Steel:
Dear Representative Steel,
One of my primary skills as a legal secretary (retired) is proofreading. I found an error in today's press release about your joint amicus brief with Senator Cruz regarding the two Affirmative Action cases currently before the Supreme Court.
In this press release, you quote Dr. Martin Luther King thus: " . . . our countrys aspiration should be to judge people not on the color of their skin but the content of their character."
In "I Have A Dream," Dr. King used the word by. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
A small thing, yes, and I realize you didn't use a direct quote. Still, I'm sure you want to publish strictly accurate press releases. Please see that your staff is made aware of this error.
Respectfully, your constituent,
Not Heidi
In hindsight, it seems I was just looking for something to bitch at her about, and I'm not happy with myself about that. I stand by what I wrote, though. I wonder if the lowly staffer who reads my email will even consider bumping it up the line. Probably not.

(26,044 posts)while my Congressperson (WA-8) is a Democrat, she was the only Democrat ever elected from my district, and is highly vulnerable this November. Ill do what I can to get her re-elected, but Im far from optimistic about her chances.

(5,104 posts)my Representative was anything but a Democrat.
I've always contributed my vote since gaining the franchise to helping keep it that way.
Never missed an election yet.

(5,104 posts)but part of me feels almost guilty about my privilege.
I know, for example, how bad my mother (now of memory) felt when--after nearly a lifetime of living in Democratic districts--moved to Laguna Woods, a Republican stronghold.
She was a passionate Democrat and when Katie Porter ran for that seat (and won) my mom was all-in working, and donating, and using her very considerable charm to help turn out the vote.
She was ecstatic. Her final vote was for Joe Biden in the CA primary. Her last-remaining life wish was to live to defeat TFG. She didn't make it.
I cast my vote in her honor.

(1,288 posts)You said your mom hoped to live to see TFG defeated. Who's TFG? It's probably obvious, but, well, I'm me. I apologize for my ignorance.

No need for an apology.

(11,446 posts)He lives by the border of Idaho and because we are a large rural district I am almost 8 hours away! I can drive to my daughter's in the bay area faster.
He is new after other guy retired. Larger percent of red in this area but it also includes two cites Ashland and Bend that are blue. My city Medford is conservative about 60/40.
There is no writing to the crazy reps I have tried before basically they say I follow what the majority in the district wants.
Time is better spent trying to get people on our side that don't vote to vote.
