No surprise that they're going after contraception because that is part of the Roman Catholic tenet. I was raised in that era, the cusp between hardcore traditional practice of Catholicism, and the transition to a more liberal, prudent approach that put the welfare of the mother as a major factor in deciding to enlarge the family size. That's how it was in my family. My parents had to stop at five kids because my mother's sixth child almost killed her. The doctor told my father that my mother might be able to get pregnant again and carry a sixth child, but he doubted my mother would make it. So, my parents stopped at five.
And that's when my father began a long practice of putting his condoms in a small rumpled paper bag, stashed in the corner of the top shelf of the closet. I don't even know why I went looking up on that top shelf, but, that's where I found my parent's first departure from their religious requirements. The second time came when our local church was shut down due to an aging priest and a diminishing congregation. When it became nearly impossible to get five kids fed and dressed to make it on time to a Catholic service that was, gee, couldn't have been more than a twenty-five minute drive but it felt like an hour, well that was it. I was thirteen at the time and my father told me that he and my mom felt that they gave us the fundamentals and it was time for us to make our own decisions.
I never felt the need to procreate like a rabbit. I knew, after growing up in a family with limited resources, that I didn't want to have a family larger than what our financial means could provide for. I didn't want to hock my children's childhood, in order to have enough money to pay for higher education. My parents had no other choice because both were born in poverty. But, when it was my time to become a parent, I did have a choice.
Those of us who lived the life of need know the hardships that await people that are now trapped by these backward times. Nothing the Republicans offer to ameliorate the pain they are going to bestow on young women is going to make up for it. There is no doubt that the Conservative Supreme Court's pipe dream is destined to fail, but not before people suffer the consequences. And there is going to be a lot of that. Another backward step in American history because the Republicans are incapable of considering the consequences of their actions.
I think one thing that could help is if Pope Francis provided some clarity on this issue because the Alito Breeder Season can't be what the Roman Catholic wants. They know that the Republicans don't give two shits about relieving pain and suffering. And if anyone knows how over-population can create conditions of poverty and need, it has to be the Roman Catholic Church, which has missions in third world countries.
So my plea is to Pope Francis. Please step in and provide modern day clarity on this debacle, before the U.S. becomes a medieval nightmare.

(175,731 posts)She spent years teaching in a Catholic grade school, became a principal of a Catholic grade school, raised her three kids Catholic, still goes to church though she watched on TV during the worst of the pandemic, has been a communion minister, etc., and all that stuff. She also used contraception for years and could not understand the women of her parish who took the pill, then confessed it to the priest...and their friends.
There was precedent for this. Our parents only had two kids and used condoms. My mother had extremely difficult pregnancies and deliveries both times. After I was born, the doctor told her to not have any more.
