Democrats need to demonstrate how heinous this court action is. Right now. With Urgency. Even if we know it will fail, we hold everybody accountable. Keep the bill simple. No law should be made that prevents a woman from getting reproductive healthcare after rape or incest. She should not have to report the crime to police, but simply tell that to her doctor.
Start there. Make a huge carve out in these state laws. We need to wrap this around the GOP's neck. Two weeks of debate would help keep this from fading away in media spot light. It also counters GOP panic about possible demonstration violence. Puts them on the defensive.
The GOP does not even care about rape and incest! Shout it out loud. Making women carry babies as a result of crimes is not a state decision - it is slavery.
Also, if it fails.. it sets up an election issue and should we be so lucky to extend congressional control, we can justify unpacking the court of religious extremists.
Anybody else see the lunacy that the GOP killed the filibuster to put these loons on the court, but Democrats wont use the same tactic to counter their judicial activism? WTF. Ya.. Mancin and Sinema.. I look forward to the day the progress of the country is not stalled because of these corporate whores. I am sure they would be very disappointed and "misled" if McConnell is back in power and kills the filibuster.

(6,974 posts)But I don't see this happening unfortunately, even though as you say we're under threat of taking away all of our freedoms and rights. You'd think, but more than likely that recess is already baked into the cake.

(74 posts)I suppose an argument can also be made that such a path would take away from the J6 hearings. One could also argue that keeping J6 scum from running again/ holding office - also benefits the abortion rights cause.
Maybe the Dems are working the schedule to set up after J6 - leading up to elections. Meanwhile, women are subjugated and we are missing a huge opportunity to frame this. I think our inability to frame efficiently hurts our cause. We are slow and often too nuanced.

(33,643 posts)Not to get all icky but incest is a broad term. If 2 legal age 1st cousins or siblings chose to sleep together, it's technically 'incest'. And adults do, in fact, occasionally choose it. And if both are adults, frankly I don't care, it's their business
But, every instance of 'incest' is not, you know ... Uncle Bill molesting his 12 yo niece.
And that'd be rape anyway.
I'd start with the carveout for rape, and let's see what we can accomplish. And if we include statutory, that will cover a large majority of the most distasteful incest cases anyway.

(74 posts)Interesting perspective - and spot on. Statutory does cover a lot of it and incest that is against their will is by definition rape.
A key part of any law would have to include mail order drugs. Those would have to be protected because we know red states will target that availability.
Having to dive into this icky stuff is why Roe was so important. This is just not government business. This crazy court decision is going to fill the courts with lawsuits on fringe issues they never dreamed of.. A Rape / Abortion rights law would turbocharge that legal mess.

(5,841 posts)... reproductive care for rape and incest victims. Let's put them on the record for that. We know it won't pass but since the great majority of the country supports abortion, get these motherfuckers on the record saying they don't give a shit if your father rapes you or a violent felon rapes you. GET THEM ON THE RECORD.
Do it NOW before the midterms and RUN ON IT.
Do a separate bill that allows abortion if the woman's life is endangered by the pregnancy. GET THEM ON THE RECORD choosing to allow women to die.
Do it NOW before the midterms and RUN ON IT.
Introduce separate bills so you can get them on the record EACH TIME.
I'm gonna write to my senators and my rep and beg them to do this. Please join me. Let's make some noise.

(74 posts)One of the biggest deficiencies in our party approach is that we have ZERO national leadership in regard to policy. People do not know what we stand for because we try to run our elections in a local manner. We try to protect blue dogs at the expense of communicating core beliefs to the electorate. The GOP platform is made by and for idiots. Less taxes. Less Government interference. Strong defense. Of course they do not follow these promise with actual policy on many occasions, but the message is clear.
Reproductive rights SHOULD be a core Democratic issue, and i am not sure our leaders will go all in. I KNOW they wont on gun rights. That is way more sticky in rural America.
Our core message? Tough one. I would say Justice, Opportunity and Fairness. Shaky on the fairness but that umbrella covers reproductive rights and attacking corporate greed..

(12,165 posts)I found pockets of powerful words and statements, but woefully little action.
Yes, we all have a role to play. There are people in our party with the power to convene and set the agenda.
To them - please, do whatever you can do to push boundaries and lead the mass movement of people who hunger to challenge the assault on women and the push to take us back to the 1700s.
To our leaders: Cancel recess. Please. Do something tangible. Even if you fail, we will see you try and it feeds us. Doing something, anything can help alleviate the crushing feeling of helplessness.
