(16,369 posts)With self loathing Andrew Sullivan. The last thing they talked about how much more normal DeSantis is than Trump. Both seemed pretty excited about the prospect of him being POTUS.
Sullivan is just a real weird guy who is about half as smart as he thinks he is. Bill is just a low info dopey guy who is getting into geezer territory.

(2,133 posts)and the BS that Sullivan said about the beauty of the states and maher's rant about the Dem party. You think he would actually discuss the Supreme court decision in any depth is asking to much. maher's depth of topics is pathetic.

(5,492 posts)She plays to the Conservative outrage circuit.
I hate how Bill Maher tries to make his guests seem more reasonable than they really are.
Also, Christine Elba is quite Conservative as well, but, at least she isnt a TERF / right wing suck up.

Sigh. I hate when Bill has nuts like this on with no context, and, just agrees with them.

(5,804 posts)I still watch from time to time but have to admit that the last few years have been difficult. My problems with Maher:
1. He conflates regular liberal/democratic viewpoints with those of his small circle of associates in showbiz. His view of libs and dems is quite skewed and resembles the caricature the right holds of libs and dems.
2. He plays the both-sides game, probably to attract conservative assholes to be guests at his show. In no way shape or form are his grievances about liberals (e.g., wokeness) of the same order of magnitude as the mortal sins of the right.
3. Because of point 1 above, his advice to liberals about how to act is pointless. Plus, it doesn't matter what liberals do, the right will still call them socialists, communists, etc.
4. He continues to claim to be against political correctness and blames the dems for it while ignoring the many examples of repubs pushing their own form of correctness (e.g., banning certain books, banning "crt," banning discussions of diversity and inclusion, etc.). I never liked the term political correctness and feel that the right has turned the original notion into something to be avoided. The same goes for how they demonized the idea of "wokeness" and "liberal."
5. Some of his guests are odious and he often allows them to speak nonsense without holding them accountable. Andrew Sullivan is the latest of the lot. Bill likes to court controversy- that's why he invites conservatives and controversial "liberals" to his show. A controversial liberal is a liberal who holds many of the same negative viewpoints about the left that Bill Maher holds.
I guess I still watch for the occasional funny joke or a good guest to set shit straight.

(9,072 posts)That conversation they were having, two gay people and Maher, about how gender dysphoria is complicated in gay and lesbian youth is a conversation that a lot of us are having in the community these days. We are discussing these things a lot amongst ourselves.
It is also a conversation that is shut down and censored in many places. Especially by straight people who aren't familiar and have no experience with issues surrounding being a gay youth. I absolutely positively would not bring that conversation here. It's not a safe space for that conversation at all.
So I appreciated the exchange, because it's the one of the only places on television I've seen it. I worry about gay youth today. I think some of the difficulties they face and the lack of understanding surrounding them is going to do great harm in the next five years. It's something that desperately needs open discussion.

(5,804 posts)It sounds like the conversation about being gay in America was a useful one. As for here at DU, I haven't picked up on any organized anti-gay animus. Have I missed something?

(9,072 posts)And both gay panel members noted that gay youth often experience it in puberty as they're sifting out their orientation and identities. However, by the time puberty is over and around early adulthood, the issues are sorted and they're just regular cis gay people. The conversation was how it's changing now that anyone with gender dysphoria is being told they're trans and should be looking into affirmative care. Identity, especially around early and mid adolescence is very, very malleable as kids sort out their identities and firm up in their orientation.
It's a really, really complicated subject. Unfortunately, even broaching it is immediately met with charges of bigotry. So, it's like forget it. Which is unfortunate, because I think this issue with gay youth needs to be discussed. But in a situation that requires a scalpel, everyone came armed with hammers.
Discussing it just isn't going to be productive.
