TORONTO (AP) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned Saturday that the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn a constitutional right to abortion could lead to the loss of other rights and indicated his country would continue to allow Americans to get abortions in Canada.
Trudeau called the courts decision horrific and voiced concern that the ruling could someday allow a rollback of legal protections for gay relationships, including the right for same-sex couples to marry.
We know that this is an extremely, not just scary, but disheartening time for so many women, Trudeau said at a news conference in Kigali, Rwanda, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Women for generations have fought for more rights in the United States, (only) to see this setback, to worry as well about how this can be expanded to more rights be taken away in the United States, he said.

(21,765 posts)the wall were built on land along the coast.
For Lakes Erie, Huron, and Ontario, the border between the two countries runs right through the middle of the lakes. For Superior, the border runs through the lake, leaving most of it in the US.
Part of the St. Lawrence River runs through NY. If the wall was built on the NY Shore, the river would be outside of the wall, in Canada.

(21,765 posts)I would not be surprised if there were increased border patrols.
Before 911, it used to be very easy going back and forth between Canada and the US. No passport, minimal border checks. Mostly the Canadian officials asked where we were born, where we were going, and how long we would be there. On the way back they asked if we bought anything and what it was. Occasionally they would pick a car to check the trunk. Never happened with me.
Now a passport is required. More detailed questioning sometimes in both directions. Proof of a negative covid test for a while. Don't know if they are still doing that, or if they require proof of vaccination. I haven't traveled since covid. Canadians might also want to check Americans for guns.
US border patrol at crossing points in red states might be suspicious of women crossing into Canada. If they start monitoring apps and online websites, would they take names to check when women return and try to prosecute them for going abroad for an abortion? Would they check phone apps, call history, and other data before letting a woman cross by car or board a plane? Nothing in a red state would surprise me.
Worse if a national abortion ban law were passed. As women successfully go to other states for abortions, the push for a national ban will get stronger.

(28,867 posts)The U.S. states of Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin do not share a direct geographic border with Canada. They do, however, possess customs facilities due to their place along the Great Lakes, which leads to the Canadian border. (All three states connect Lake Michigan, while Wisconsin also connects to Lake Superior).

(36,748 posts)Best route is across IL, then its only about 45 miles through Indiana to the Michigan border on I-94. So you will have IL and MI to choose from.
I fully expect clinics to be opened on the border with Indiana within a year or so.
For Ohio and Kentucky, Ann Arbor is only about 45 miles from the border with Ohio.

The Upper Peninsula connects to Canada in the east. The western part is near Minnesota, but would require driving through Wisconsin.
Red states on the border would likely patrol it to prevent people from crossing over. If there was a federal law against abortion, there are still ways to cross the border.
But for many women, being away so long and then returning might be difficult, if not impossible.

Best clinics to come to will be in Ann Arbor and the Metro Detroit area.
Ann Arbor and neighboring Ypsilanti are ultra liberal.
Windsor, Ontario is only about 40 min away from Ann Arbor.

(24,899 posts)And I am in my mid fifties now the rest of my life would be spent in a regressive psychotically conservative country where the chances of me getting shot going to the grocery store or 10 times or a thousand times higher than any place else in this world outside of a war zone.
I do not even though I tend to stay in shape not intend to grab an SKS or an AR-15 and run around shooting things for the rest of my middle age.
I do not wish to become a suicide bomber. I would like to retire and relative peace in a couple of years. Therefore we are looking at other countries. Portugal's interesting so is Spain they had their 30 or 40 years of fascism from world war II on in to the seventies. They learn their lessons.
Francisco Franco lasted there for a damn long time. I don't want to live in a country that's got their little mini Francisco Franco's in charge.
