Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWas Robert Bork the only Republican nominee that didn't dodge the truth or lie about Roe?
Here's what he said during the Senate hearings in 1987:
"I am convinced, as I think most legal scholars are, that Roe v. Wade {the court's 1973 abortion ruling} is, itself, an unconstitutional decision, a serious and wholly unjustifiable judicial usurpation of state legislative authority," Bork testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee in 1981, adding that the case "is by no means the only example of such unconstitutional behavior by the Supreme Court."
Did Scalia and Kennedy dodge the truth as well? What about O'Conner? Was she even asked?

(2,642 posts)1. Scalia dodged with a lie.
He said he would not bring a conservative agenda to the Court.
Ted Kennedy asked Scalia directly Will You Overturn Roe?
Scalia declined to answer, saying it was inappropriate to respond to the question.

(40,203 posts)2. I think they all played games with the Senate during their hearings.
Which makes me think that the confirmation hearings are bullshit.
OConnor, to her credit, once on the court said she would not vote to overturn Row.

(15,373 posts)4. Any idea what O'Connor said during the hearings?
Or did they not ask about Roe in 1981, since it wasn't precedent yet? It's possible that she was anti-Roe at one time and evolved, like many did.

(40,203 posts)5. Wikipedia says she wouldn't say what she thought of Roe.
But all the loony right to lifers were against her, so that says something.
Sadly, almost perversely, she was succeeded by Alito.

(3,800 posts)3. Bork was honest about his intentions.
After that they all just lied through their fucking teeth.
