https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/06/25/1107416457/monkeypox-outbreak-in-usOn June 13, a man in New York began to feel ill.
"He starts to experience swollen lymph nodes and rectal discomfort," says epidemiologist Keletso Makofane, who's at Harvard University.
The man suspects he might have monkeypox. He's a scientist, and knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms, Makofane says. So the man goes to his doctor and asks for a monkeypox test. The doctor decides, instead, to test the man for common sexually transmitted diseases. All those come back negative.
A few days later, the pain worsens," Makofane says. So he goes to the urgent care and again asks for a monkeypox test. This time, the provider prescribes him antibiotics for a bacterial infection.

(43,062 posts)If they don't see it all the time, they have no clues except CDC bulletins and Big Pharma reps. That's why they test. And as long as they do standard care for what they believe you have, you can't sue them.

(10,795 posts)Roche, for one, is already applying what it learned from COVID to the next infectious disease outbreak. Only a few weeks after a spate of monkeypox cases first cropped up in Europe, the company has completed development of three separate tests for the virus.
Developed in conjunction with its subsidiary TIB Molbiol, Roches tests are already available to scientists for research use in the majority of countries worldwide, the Swiss company said Wednesday.

For many of the confirmed cases, health officials don't know how the person caught the virus. Those infected haven't traveled or come into contact with another infected person. That means the virus is spreading in some communities and cities, cryptically.
Although it obviously isnt likely to be aerosolized there could be transmission via commonly touched surfaces. I guess it wont be known until there is more testing and possibly contact tracing.
Included in the article there are some unsubstantiated allusions to it being a disease currently limited to male homosexuals, I found very disturbing. Shades of AIDS.
