Jane Fonda on the reversal of Roe v Wade: 'The Supreme Court has become a far-right swamp'

Jane Fonda on the reversal of Roe v Wade: 'The Supreme Court has become a far-right swamp'
In an interview with 'Le Monde,' the American actress, activist and feminist criticizes the 'inconceivable' decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

What is your reaction to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion on Friday, June 25?

I am sickened! Really? The United States of America has joined with backward countries who still have these almost medieval views of the role of women? It's beyond shocking. It's kind of unbelievable. I’m hoping it will mobilize women to vote this November. I’m hoping it will galvanize progressive people to vote because of what’s at stake. But the Supreme court has lost credibility, it has become a right-wing swamp. A swamp.

Today, my friends and I are all mourning. A few of them asked if I was thinking about staying in Italy. It's probably better there. And maybe if I was younger I would. But I feel that I cannot leave the United States. I want to stay and fight. I don't want to walk away.

...............

Feminism is a worldview. Feminism is a philosophy about life. There are men who are feminists, there are women who are feminists. It's not just about women. It's about values. It's about what you value in life. It's about how you are, how you view nature and biodiversity. You know, when you become an activist over a period of time, what you realize is that the issues are all interlaced. Think if it wasn't for patriarchy, there would be no climate crisis.

The opposite of feminism is viewing humanity as a hierarchy. The white men are on top. And then there's a hierarchy of who matters. And nature is at the bottom of the list. You view a tree, you look at a tree and you say, that would make a beautiful chair. It's okay to cut it down and slice it up and make it into a chair without thinking about what you're doing to the surrounding ecosystem. When you call yourself a feminist and you fight for feminist values, you're fighting for the earth. You're fighting for children. You're fighting for men. You're not fighting for matriarchy. You're fighting for democracy.

Another woman who the RW vilified for years. They can't stand strong women or the fact that women can have strong opinions and aren't afraid to voice them.

Anyone know if we've heard from Gloria Steinem yet about this latest set back? I couldn't help but think about her these past few days.

A national treasure.

The two movies I really love her role in were, “The China Syndrome” and “Rollover”.
