MENDON, Mo. Multiple injuries are reported after the Amtrak Southwest Chief train hit a dump truck at a public crossing and derailed near Mendon, north of Marshall.
The derailment is about 100 miles northeast of Kansas City, or about two hours by car.
Amtrak confirms there were 243 passengers on the train at the time, and there are injuries.
A picture of the scene shows passengers sitting on the side of at least four overturned train cars. People who live near the derailment said a total of seven cars went off the tracks.
A number of people with injuries were bussed to a nearby high school for treatment.
Emergency responders also called for a mass casualty trailer and all local emergency services from surrounding areas to report to the crash scene, according to dispatch audio shared on Broadcastify.
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson had just learned about the derailment when he make an appearance at an event in Kansas City Monday afternoon.
Its a terrible situation, I do know that several cars have been derailed. We do believe there could be some fatalities, but again its way early on, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said. Its very unfortunate any time you have a derailment of a train and multiple cars, its not a good day.
The train left Kansas City in route to Chicago Monday afternoon.
This is a developing story; check back with FOX4 for updates.

(16,925 posts)Unless there was a breakdown of a crossing signal, the truck ignored basic safety rules and is responsible for whatever the outcome is regarding this mess.
There was another train/stone truck collision in western PA a few weeks ago when a truck loaded with stone pulled in front of a Norfolk/Southern train hauling oil cars. The collision left 14 tankers derailed, some sitting in the water at a tributary of the Allegheny River. Quick action by safety crews minimized the damage regarding 'water contamination' - but the water supply system of Pittsburgh could have been compromised. Hundreds of thousands of people compromised because a truck driver didn't "Stop, Look, and Listen."
Hoping for the best for those on the train.......
