He probably has the same Apple ID he had before. I still have an iPhone 8, which still has most of the stuff that was on my first iPhone, which was a 3. When you get a new phone they load the stuff from the old one onto it, so even if he got that one after 1/6/21 the relevant previous data is probably on it.
