https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/27/democrats-angry-party-leaders/I kind of agree. we need strong bold action. the GOP plays hardball while the dems try and be civil. but were in a war. and in a war you have to fight with every tool you have.
Biden should start taking strong steps. if a court later throws out anything he does well at least he did something...

(28,836 posts)I get the frustration, but this is 50 years in the making on the Republican side.
Expecting concrete, sweeping solutions days after Roe was overturned is just not realistic.
The answer, as it has always been, is to get more Democrats elected at all levels of government. It's going to be a very difficult, very long-term project. In the meantime, find workarounds and work with what we can to provide access to as many women as possible.
And stop blaming Democrats for everything.

(14,367 posts)They also won't like it if you push for actions beyond lip service.
TwilightZone
(28,836 posts)That one is a pipe dream.
If you have the magic wand, perhaps you should contact Democratic leadership and let them know what the solution is. Heaven knows that they should be able to fix a 50-year plan by the GOP in 72 hours.

(28,836 posts)maybe you should be contacting Democratic leadership instead of throwing Democrats and DUers under the bus on a website.

(9,103 posts)Which Democrats in particular are expressing "rising anger"? Are there any names listed?
The decision came down like 72 hours ago. It seems a bit soon to start attacking Democrats when it's the GOP that has done all this damage.
And what "strong steps" are people suggesting?
LonePirate
(14,367 posts)I cannot confirm if they are mentioned in the article but the loudest voices have been those on the left side of the party.
TwilightZone
(28,836 posts)Thomas and the others are not going to be removed from office. If you think no-chance demands said loudly are more important than coming up with real-world plans and actions, then your focus - and your anger - are seriously misplaced.
Even AOC knows that they aren't going to be removed. She said what she said simply for effect - to get people motivated. That's what politicians do.
LonePirate
(14,367 posts)I'll stick with those on the left who are actually proposing things, regardless of how much of a chance you feel they have.
...would you have them do? Easy to scream "DO SOMETHING". But I notice you never answer when someone asks you to give a specific course of action that has any realistic hope of working. What do you advocate? Codefying Roe vs Wade? Don't have the votes. Impeach Supreme Court Justices? That's a friggin pipe dream fantasy that has no realist prayer of even being taken seriously. No chance of getting the votes to pull that off. Stacking the court with more judges? Another fantasy that we don't have the votes for. Not to mention that both of those last two would set horrible precedents that Republicans would surely use the second they regained power.
So again, what action are you sick of Democrats not taking. I'm all ears.

Is that strong enough?
LonePirate
(14,367 posts)At 13, we would have a 7 to 6 court that could easily be upended if someone on our side was replaced by the other side. At 15, we have some breathing room.

(12,336 posts)Treaties that have codified this (Rome Statute, I believe- to which I think we are party).
Our record on signing and ratifying human rights and humanitarian treaties is not good (see CEDAW for instance).
Plus, water boarding is a violation of international law and we didnt seem worried about that.

(12,651 posts)Joe Biden has a larger audience to please. He has to remain appealing to a broader coalition.
If Congress takes bolder action, Joe Biden isn't gonna stop it or get in their way. Have Congress "buck" the President if necessary but Congress is the entity that needs to take the bold action.

(28,836 posts)As they have been doing for decades. There's no need for trigger laws when there are already laws in place.

(28,836 posts)It's right here on DU. That, however, is nothing new. There's always been a contingent who blame everything on the Democrats. It's Biden's fault, it's Obama's fault. I'm surprised that "we" haven't somehow blamed Hillary for it (yet).

(24,728 posts)As for California Im glad to see a constitutional amendment going to a vote. There should also be a commitment to create a state resource aimed at ensuring reproductive access nationally. That is needed, doing everything possible to ensure that the effect of this decision is nullified in practice.
