Instagram and Facebook remove posts offering abortion pills

https://www.localmemphis.com/article/news/nation-world/meta-removes-abortion-pill-ads/507-33570f56-0864-4f88-98de-206187911147

WASHINGTON — Facebook and Instagram have begun promptly removing posts that offer abortion pills to women who may not be able to access them following a Supreme Court decision that stripped away constitutional protections for the procedure.

Such social media posts ostensibly aimed to help women living in states where preexisting laws banning abortion suddenly snapped into effect on Friday. That's when the high court overruled Roe v. Wade, its 1973 decision that ruled access to abortion a constitutional right.

Memes and status updates explaining how women could legally obtain abortion pills in the mail exploded across social platforms. Some even offered to mail the prescriptions to women living in states that now ban the procedure.

Almost immediately, Facebook and Instagram began removing some of these posts, just as millions across the U.S. were searching for clarity around abortion access. General mentions of abortion pills, as well as posts mentioning specific versions such as mifepristone and misoprostol, suddenly spiked Friday morning across Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and TV broadcasts, according to an analysis by the media intelligence firm Zignal Labs.

More at link. Gosh, this wouldn't be a coordinated effort to deny women a choice, would it?

I've never had them either, but it seems like you just can't shake those who do. It's like they simply won't look at the ramifications of giving him their data to monetize.

They are the same as those who don't see and won't acknowledge how their sewer pipe dumping into a small stream pollutes everything downstream because the water rushing by the window looks clear.

And the two platforms mentioned also have a large shareholder connection to pooptin.

It's not like I have anything to hide and anyone could figure out where I am if they tried. I was a federal employee/public servant for years so I'm out there, I just don't care to advertise on a global forum.

in trade publications about FB and the creepy stuff they would do with personal data and so on and so forth. I tried to warn off family and friends from that sewer - all to no avail. It was frustrating as hell. I'll never understand the appeal.

I wouldn't put it past anti-abortion nuts to send fake pills to people. they set up plenty of fake "crisis pregnancy centers."

The message needs to get out that the safe place to order pills is through abortion clinics, not religious proselytizing clinics masquerading as medical clinics.

There’s no way to shut such clinics down, especially under this Court, but I think they could be regulated more, especially for false advertising. Require anyone who performs an ultrasound to do so in a state-licensed medical facility. I’re sure we could find more ways to make it more difficult for them to operate their scams on women.

although this court may very well shut that down in the near future.

It's probably already illegal for non medical individuals to offer prescription meds to others, which is what this facebook thing sounds like.

C'mon now. Some common sense should reign here. Facebook can't vouch for who is sending what to whom. If one woman dies because she got an abortion pill from a Facebook post that contained something else, guess who finds themselves in court?

Instead of being angry, I think people should be grateful. This move can only protect women from predatory practices that may harm them. And believe me, those predatory practices are coming. And that's not even counting radicals who might want to actively sabotage the distribution of drugs for abortion.

Online pharmacies are a thing. In the wake of all this, let's ensure we can help set up safe and reliable resources for women.

Putting drugs in the hands of social media is a fucking horrid idea.

Never mind the fact that it might be simply a trick to get the names and contact info of women who want access to this medication.

No way would I take a chance on giving my information to someone I don't know on the internet. I'm surprised more people don't see the inadvisability of this.
