(5,324 posts)As an LSU graduate I can tell you that Joe Burrow's pro-choice stance will not play well here in Louisiana.
Naah... actually, nobody here REALLY cares for those "unborn babies"... it's all about making cosmic brownie points with some imagined overseer.... and football is bigger than their god, anyway.

(2,312 posts)Joe's family are Nebraskans, and he was born in Lincoln, where he had really wanted to play football (don't get me started). He was raised in Ohio and plays there now. And he played football for LSU after transferring there from THE Pretentious State University in Columbus. His stance won't play well in any of those states, but they'll hear it, that's for sure.

(22,345 posts)child. These examples are vivid, but they also sustain the narrative that abortions have to be worthy by being emotionally devastating. Sometimes people dont want to be pregnant, and thats okay. This meme also erases Black people and other nonwhite people, as well as trans people who need abortion care.
Disclaimer, because apparently it's not always clear: This doesn't mean I'm against his stance. It's a reminder that we can always do better and should strive to do so, especially when we're coming new to a movement.

(5,644 posts)though if this works for some people to think, great. I tend to think that the "pro-life" zealots are really beyond reason and just need to be beaten at the polls and out numbered in institutions.

(3,979 posts)She wasn't blindly opposed to the best of the anti-abortion arguments, but ultimately she landed on the pro-choice position because she didn't trust the government to decide whose "story" is compelling enough to be worthy of reproductive autonomy.

One should not need a reason beyond personal choice.

(5,526 posts)But I disagree for this reason.
The pro-forced birth crowd likes to paint this as a black and white issue.
Pro-choice is all about the gray.
Anything that underlines the complexities of abortion helps to chip away at the all or nothing mentality.
Today, there are probably more than a few Joe Burrow fans thinking..."well that circumstance should not be outlawed"
Personally, I think those conversations about what should be allowed can be very helpful because it often leads to people realizing that the answer is often ..."it depends"
To which I say..."congratulations! you are actually pro-choice and you just didn't realize it. Now get the fuck out of the way and let people decide for themselves."
Personally I agree with you that it shouldn't matter why people want to get one. But winning arguments are rarely made in absolutes.

(6,358 posts)I'm pretty sure that his twitter handle is JoeyB. JoeyB_9 is a guy (RichNigg) from Naperville,IL with 185 followers. Even with that, it doesn't look like this tweet is even from that account.

(8,739 posts)I am doing a 180 on this guy. Love his talent, a bit irritated at his arrogance. No longer. You go Joe. You have won me over. This kind of bravery and standing for so many not a blessed as he is rare in super stardom. So sick of Texas and Jerry Jones, ready to give up 50 years a fan of Dallas. I think I may become a Joe and Bengals fan. He knew damn well Louisiana will hammer his stance for womens rights, but stood tall and said screw that. Go Bengals. Extremely impressed with Joe and his character.

(1 post)Mainly because Ohio U students make up the vast majority of the county's population. Everything around there is dark, dark red, but I have to make sure my alma mater gets credit for one of the few blue counties in Ohio. Who Dey!

(9,895 posts)But I don't require any of that to support my undying support of a woman's RIGHT to control their body.
If this ruling is to hold, then I want unfettered access to the organs or ANYONE who is deceased. There is more potential in saving life through livers, kidneys and hearts than stopping any number of abortions - EVERY FUCKING YEAR. Yet that corpse retains the rights to bury the life-saving organs without so much as a single comment or reason.
Women matter more than deceased, rotting bodies...period.
And if people cannot understand that, then fuck them too.

I kind of think of pro-choice folks as "mother-savers."

And the women were so matter of fact about it that I am still stunned. Thank heaven that has never happened to me. The men in my life were honorable and decent. My dad never raised a hand to me. My brother gave up his life to help care for our dad.
