They get what they want because they are willing to bend and break rules. They rely on the apathy and ignorance of Americans, which is in LARGE supply.

It doesn't take a lot of smarts to incite anger and resentment in people for personal gain, just a lack of ethics and morals.

When people are passionate about a situation, they often think that other people are just as passionate about their ideas. While a large majority of Americans agree with gun safety regulations, something like 75% of most polling populations, the devil is in the details. When you start putting out specific policies, that support starts to erode somewhat. That is what I think the Democratic leadership sees that many advocates do not. We do need people like David Hogg to be pushing, but as many have said, the Democratic Party is the only vehicle that is able to advance policies that are good for the people. To insult and try to move people away from the party is counter productive. At this point in our history, there is no viable solution further left than the Democratic Party that will have any kind of effect on our politics. Push the party, work with the party, get progressives elected, but insulting the party is not a good strategy.

Democrats have been giving Republicans far too much credit for operating in good faith. Republicans have handed us any number of winning issues for the fall, and Democrats need to seize those issues with both hands. Yes, there are pockets of the country where low information voters care about owning the libs and nothing else. But there are great swaths of the country that I think would respond positively to the Democrats' message on women's health, firearm regulation, government spending, tax reform, and other issues. We have to be bold and if Cletus down at the diner is unhappy, Bonnie serving his coffee might be very happy to vote Democratic.

If we were as good at manipulating people who leaned towards an authoritarian mindset - we would vote every single election.

Disillusioned Trumpers still voted for the s.o.b. in November 2020.

I wish we could have that kind of loyalty. We definitely have a lot of left leaning folks who are authoritarian - but we can't get them to the polls by fear of the other.

They better start fearing the other . . . because they have a SCOTUS on their side.

You want too much, too soon. The GOP has been working for over 60 years to get to this moment while not really governing or doing anything else for people. The Dems have been governing and working their asses off to get whatever social safety net we now have and trying to keep it. We can't and should not give up what we have achieved to get absolutely nothing in exchange. Had the JDems been with us fully in 2016, The second woman President might be in charge now.

Yes, the reTHugs are not brilliant in any way, but they posses the cunning and killer instinct of an alpha predator. They're much better at finishing off a vulnerable and weakened opponents than Democrats are. Much better. They go for the jugular while, more often than not, we try to understand our opponents and compromise with them.

I disagree in the strongest terms that we are incompetent. We are not. If anything, we are too civil for our own good. The reTHugs use our own humanity against when they can because they are soulless, predatory fiends who perceive human compassion and tolerance as genuine weaknesses. Occasionally they succeed. That's not incompetence. That's just us trying to retain our humanity in the fetid, primordial bog the reTHugs have transformed our political and legal systems into.

Rather than smear critics, pay attention and listen to what they have to say. (Listening doesn’t require agreement). There is anger, frustration and a resulting cynicism from the largest untapped voting bloc in the nation. Discounting or ignoring their anger is a recipe for disaster.

These are the voters Dems need to retain their majorities and add to the senate.

supposed to do to appease their misplaced anger? Why does the whole party have to kiss the ass of people who are ignorant and naive about what can possibly be done at this particular point in time. We are constantly told not to piss them off or it will hurt our chances to win. But tell me what can they win without the vastly larger mainstream of the party? Why are they never advised to refrain from pissing us off or it will DESTROY their chance to win anything? I'm sick of the double standard.

Let the lunatic fringe turn their back on the Democratic Party. Let's see what kind of gun legislation they can get passed when the Republicans have a 2/3 majority in the House and Senate with some Trump wannabe in the White House. Maybe they can mean tweet the Republicans into submission and really get something done. Huh? Let's see how that goes for them.

Including a Senate majority that is Manchin/Sinema proof.

The fact that you feel the need to continue to “other” the youth voters - the largest untapped voting bloc in the country, who, if mobilized properly, will decide every and any election in the next decade at least- shows that you are part of the problem, not the solution.

Yet they are never chastised or warned of this fact.

Give me a frigging break- the youth vote has been taken for granted by the Dem power structure almost as much as the BIPOC vote (“who else are they going to vote for?”); even when more and more young progressives are elected to office, they are frequently dismissed or told to listen to their elders, who tell them the only path to winning elections and wielding power is through Pragmatic Incrementalism.

The youth voters are ignored, not listened to, and then demeaned with comments like “they don’t vote anyway”, while tremendous resources are spent trying to flip “economically anxious” white boomers in swing state diners.

Talk about self-fulfilling prophecies…

It wasn’t “Hooray! We passed a gun bill!”

The message that was heard was that the Dem leadership doesn’t see women’s choice as a priority.

Numerous Dem legislators did indeed take to the streets to protest the overturn of Roe. It was unfortunate that the passage of the gun bill coincided with the announcement of the SCOTUS ruling. Dem leadership should have been able to adapt to changing circumstances, and shown an awareness of optics.

Even if only small. Now, on to the Roe disaster. To those who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. OMG Fuck the DEMS and their bad optics, don't they know we're more important over here! Like I said, his tantrum is a display in spectacular stupidity. Particularly since he's billed himself as a gun control advocate/activist. And quite frankly, the number of people whining about "optics" and expecting those families to slink away because they were "interfering" with the Roe freak out (which by the way should have come as no surprise to anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention) is profoundly disappointing, to say the least.

Republicans are very good at distilling their positions down to three-syllable soundsbytes, to which Democrats respond with five paragraph theses complete with footnotes and cross references and allusions to previous statements. This is and has been a strategy to guarantee failure, and it reveals a fatal lack of understanding of how modern media works.

Step two: stand for something! Republicans can’t shut up about how conservative they are, but how many Democrats celebrate their liberal or progressive credentials.

Granted, Democrats are fighting an uphill battle against the media, which traditionally gives the mic to Republicans, to allow them plenty of time to frame discussions, but that means Democrats need to take an even stronger stand, rather than shrugging while Repugs run circles around them.
