How on earth can we have fallen so low? We've had some despicable characters in American history (Confederate leaders, anyone?) but even during the worst of it SOME public decorum was required of those in authority. Even conservative icon, President Reagan, while peddling some horrible policies, still upheld personal standards of decorum. My guess -- and I really don't have to guess -- is that he would be disgusted by President Trump's behavior.
Are we declining so far just when it looked like we might put some of the worst attributes of our character to rest (slavery, women's lack of rights, child labor, etc.)?

(4,616 posts)We are in a nation that is severely lacking any semblance of an education and unwilling to take any responsibility. Most people can't name the 3 branches of government let alone know how it works, but have daily suggestion on what the government should be doing. A LOT are seriously upset there are no charges of treason. The focus/debate of yesterdays testimony is ketchup on the wall and a tantrum in a vehicle. The SC now is all RBG's fault. HC is running a child sex ring in a Pizza place. Bill Gates created COVID so he could microchip us all. And why isn't the president doing something about gas prices! And the list goes on an on.

(1,783 posts)...in high schools, if not before. But I'm not sure that bringing back civics isn't overly idealistic these days. The followers of Drumpf are probably too far gone, and of course they are almost all beyond high school age anyway. A return to civics instruction would only benefit future generations and is by definition a long-term strategy. We may just have to wait for the worst of the Drumpf followers to die off, sad to say.
