Man gored by bison at Yellowstone National Park in second attack this year

A 34-year-old man is recovering from injuries sustained at Yellowstone National Park after he was charged at and brutally gored by a bison when he and his family got too close to the animal.

The incident occurred near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful on Monday when the unidentified man from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was walking with his family on a boardwalk at Yellowstone National Park when a bull bison began charging at them, according to a press release issued by the park.

“Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male,” the statement from Yellowstone continued. “The male sustained an injury to his arm and was transported by ambulance to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.”

It is unclear whether the family had gotten too close to the animal or if the attack was unprovoked but Yellowstone officials confirmed that the incident remains under investigation and did not disclose any further information on the man’s condition.

Some may have but there are thousands of them, mostly inside the caldera, probably wouldn't do much unless the crust was damaged.

That's an interesting question, I'll see what I can find out, might take a day or two, everybody's got their hands full up there right now.

15 Facts About Bison
https://www.nps.gov/articles/15-facts-about-bison.htm

They're big, really big...

1. Bison are the largest mammal in North America. Male bison (called bulls) weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall, while females (called cows) weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet. Bison calves weigh 30–70 pounds at birth.

They have "accidents"...

7. You can judge a bison's mood by its tail. When it hangs down and switches naturally, the bison is usually calm. If the tail is standing straight up, watch out! It may be ready to charge. No matter what a bison's tail is doing, remember that they are unpredictable and can charge at any moment. Every year, there are regrettable accidents caused by people getting too close to these massive animals. It's great to love the bison, but love them from a distance.

You're not gonna outrun one...

9. Bison may be big, but they're also fast. They can run up to 35 miles per hour. Plus, they're extremely agile. Bison can spin around quickly, jump high fences and are strong swimmers.

And you can tell people until you are blue in the face to stay the fuck away from them yet they will go right up to them.

They info upon entry to the park has become more aggressive in their messaging and still...

As a once-upon-a-time ranger, I have informed people about their safety only to see the NPS alerts an hour later reporting that a person you spoke to got flung or gored or mauled by a bear. It's beyond frustrating.

Had my own run-ins with these creatures and I don't recommend tempting fate when in their habitat.

to take a picture. The Chinese tourists in particular seem to think it is a petting zoo. I saw one guy
get off the boardwalk at Old Faithful and run accost the crust to get a better picture. You go through
you are in boiling water, insane. I went on a walking trail by Old Faithful, I saw a bison ahead of me about
25 yards away I went the other direction immediately. They are big, dumb, can't see too well, can run 30 MPH and
jump a 6-foot fence from a dead stand still.

Except for the "dumb" part. They are not dumb, they are very intelligent which is what makes them so dicey to deal with. They are nearly impossible to "round up" because they have tactics that can best the most skilled wranglers. I have many years of experience with bison, living near them, and I can attest that underestimating their intellect is the first mistake.

They just saw a photo op

I saw a potentially dangerous animal that was near panic.

I reminded people they were not in a zoo and enough people backed off for the poor thing to get away.

Even a rabbit can ruin your day if it feels threatened and feels it must fight. Let alone an animal weighing hundreds of pounds.

These are wild animals. It's similar to the morons in Florida who get as close as they can to a Gator to take pictures

EVERYWHERE that warn not to approach the animals.

I have zero sympathy for morons who can't be bothered to follow the instructions that are there to keep them safe.

When my family was there, there was so many people just disregarding the posted warnings!
