Army Drops Requirement for High School Diploma Amid Recruiting Crisis
24 Jun 2022

The Army is tossing its mandate for potential recruits to have a high school diploma or GED certificate to enlist in the service, in one of the most dramatic moves yet in the escalating recruiting crisis hitting the entire Defense Department.
On Thursday, the service announced that individuals may enlist without those previously required education certifications if they ship to basic training this fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1.
Recruits must also be at least 18 years old and otherwise qualify for a job in the active-duty Army. They also must score at least a 50 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, an SAT-style quiz to measure a potential recruit's academic ability.
A 50 on the test is a relatively low score, with 31 being the minimum to qualify for service. Combat arms jobs such as infantrymen and cavalry scouts need only minimal scores to serve, while admin work such as a human resources specialist or public affairs require scores of 100 or higher.

(22,029 posts)Now that Republicans have decimated our public education systems, the Army can't find people educated enough to defend our country.
Ignorant people in charge of weaponry and machines of war. What could possibly go wrong?

(4,913 posts)I was a high school dropout. I scored a 123 on the test. I qualified for just about every job. Just because someone drops out of high school, doesn't mean they are stupid. I was an honor roll dropout in high school.

(16,072 posts)I enlisted in 1977, had just dropped out in my junior year...took the ASVAB, qualified for most MOS's, but was still required to get a GED.

(4,913 posts)I told them I wanted to get my GED. They said you have to take classes before you can take your GED. I said NO. Give me the test and I will pass it. He made a phone call and they let me take the test the next day. I didn't even study for it. I smoked it. They tried to get me to sign up for college courses right on the spot and I said, NO, I walked out.

Curious, too, since there are many students that now take college-credit classes while still in HS. Nothing like that when I was in HS, but I was 6 months into the "age" eligibility when I graduated. Some might even meet criteria for immediate OCS.

(6,800 posts)When I worked in Mental Health Services, I had quite a few guys take it and amazingly they all failed it. It was so interesting that I have thought one of those military entrance exams should be given to all 18 year olds who want a gun.
Often we hear the argument cited that they are old enough to serve in the military so they should be able to get a gun. But, they can't serve in the military until they pass that test, so I think they should pass some kind of military entrance exam to get a gun. I mean it tests for basic competencies to be suitable for the the military, so being able to handle or be trained to handle a gun is one of those competencies.
I' sure that's to reasonable though for Republicans.
