It is possible.
Because at the time, he knew they had a lot of weapons. He had asked the security to shut down the MAGS because the large number of weapons was preventing him from getting the crowd he wanted at the Ellipse.
Also, this was immediately after his speech and the SS was taking him back to the White House. It was reported that he was very "irate". We do not know for sure how this was manifested?
But, Trump knew that the National Guard was not going to interfere per his orders. This was a couple of hours before VP Pence had taken it upon himself to call in the Guard and restore order.
So, at the time, Trump felt safe and secure going to the Capitol. He knew those with the weapons did not come there to hurt him.
It is not totally unbelievable that he wanted to lead the mob into the Capitol, however absurd it may sound.

(44,998 posts)He has to say either "yes, I wanted to lead the insurrectionist mob but was denied by secret service" or "no, no way was I gonna risk my life with a mad bunch of maga crazies trying to topple our government". Which is it, Trump?

(11,730 posts)Trump is a coward. He is a bully, but bullies are usually acting out their own victimization aggressively, usually toward people who they perceive as weaker. Trump would definitely not have been inside the Capitol with the people. He would likely have stayed in his vehicle with his protection and watched as the events unfolded. I am sure that he would get a thrill from seeing the action up front.
Kind of like sitting ringside at a boxing match. You get close enough to get an experience, but you don't get punched in the face.

But, lead the mob? The front lines of a fight? No way.

(17,431 posts)or perhaps more correctly he wanted to lead from behind.
He wanted to enter after the action to declare an emergency. Then he would declare that he was in absolute charge until he could "resolve" the election. That resolution would of course be in his favor.

When there was any fighting,
He led his regiment from behind--
He found it less exciting.

(56,828 posts)he either would have gone in the presidential vehicle or taken a golf cart. I don't he's capable of walking more than 15-20 yards at a time. Most likely, he goes in the Beast or the Suburban & watches from a distance -he would not want to rub shoulders with most of the MAGA base.

(19,473 posts)Mussolini never planned to be part of the march, but once it was over and he was in power, he had photographs published showing him marching with other Fascist leaders, giving the impression that he had been there and at the front of the march. Trump would have done the same.
