By ELLEN KNICKMEYER
A Supreme Court ruling Thursday not only limited the Environmental Protection Agencys ability to regulate climate pollution by power plants, but also suggests the court is poised to block other efforts by Biden and federal agencies to limit the climate-wrecking fumes emitted by oil, gas and coal.
Its a blow to Bidens commitment to slash emissions in the few years scientists say are left to stave off worse and deadlier levels of global warming. And its a sign, to Democrats at home and allies abroad, of the dwindling options remaining for Biden to reverse the legacy of President Donald Trump, who mocked the science of climate change. Trumps three Supreme Court appointees provided half of the affirmative votes in Thursdays 6-3 ruling.
After the ruling, a veteran Democratic lawmaker acknowledged he saw little hope of Congress producing any meaningful climate legislation, either. Theres no easy fix from Congress from this mess, Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said. The foreign allies whom Biden once spoke of leading to a global clean-power transformation are wondering if the United States can even lead itself.
The domestic climate setbacks have helped slow early global momentum for climate breakthroughs. Theyve weakened U.S. leverage as [John] Kerry presses countries including China to swing away from coal and other damaging fossil fuels something Biden had pledged the U.S. would lead on by example.

(3,998 posts)FFS! Im so tired of MSM framing this as if it is Bidens agenda and legacy. So far, Ive seen Bloomberg, CBS, ABC, and now AP putting these absurd headlines out, as if it is only going to affect the politics of the situation. Get in the game, people.

(16,949 posts)maybe President Biden and our majority in both chambers.
Maybe say f**k the majority on the court and send funding, science and willing hands to partner with countries taking climate disaster seriously. Countries and people that aren't owned by big oil, or koch bros. or the family. Just ignore the unfit rulings and do what is the better path for climate. And all of the other things the unfit 6 are trying to ruin.
