lots of people thought it ended in January 2021 -- not true, didn't begin then either.
these pieces were put in place years ago and now we're at a significant disadvantage if we get in the way.
they've been preparing for this moment for decades, while we pretended our institutions were too strong to be so easily overthrown by idiots.
now we will all pay the price, as painful and grotesque as it will be.

"The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is an American legal organization of conservatives and libertarians that advocates for a textualist and originalist interpretation of the United States Constitution. It features a student division, a lawyers division, and a faculty division. The society currently has chapters at more than 200 American law schools. The lawyers division comprises more than 70,000 practicing attorneys (organized as "lawyers chapters" and "practice groups" within the division) in ninety cities.[2] The society is headquartered in Washington, D.C. Through speaking events, lectures, and other activities, it provides a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with members of the legal profession, the judiciary, and the legal academy.[4] It is one of the United States' most influential legal organizations.[5][6]"

... and they've been doing it since at least the early 70's. The thing is, Federalist Society is very good at hiding their fingerprints and footprints, so a lot of Americans have no idea they're being manipulated by them. The investigative journalist Jane Mayer has been following this story for a long time.

California's Proposition 8 was created by the two working together to take away the right for gays to marry in California.

Then the Evangelicals and Fundamentalists realized it was an amazing fund raising scare fantasy.

Eventually the Tea Party, Evangelicals & Republican party merged. And now there's nothing they love more than having power over someone else's body.

So the short answer to "What kind of assholes" would be "The Christian Ones".

Personal life

Nessel met her wife Alanna Maguire while they were both working on the legal case DeBoer v. Snyder which was ultimately successful in striking down Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage. Nessel proposed to Maguire in 2015 outside of the United States Supreme Court. The couple married in July 2015 with the marriage being officiated by Judge Bernard Friedman, the judge who had originally struck down Michigan's same-sex marriage ban in March 2014.[48]

Nessel and Alanna have twin sons, Alex and Zach.

Dana Nessel: ‘Thank you Alanna, I love you’

snip

She turned to her wife Alanna Maguire and said: ‘[I want to thank] my beautiful wife for sticking with me through all of this. Thank you Alanna, I love you.’

Nessel then addressed the audience: ‘And for all of you out there that can’t handle the fact that I am about to become the first openly gay person to hold state-wide office [in Michigan]…’

She then pulls her wife towards her and kisses her on the lips. The pair also move in for a sweet hug.

The crowd erupts into cheers of support.

Nessel then leans into the microphone and says: ‘That was so obnoxious – but I just had to do it.

From the picture I see genuine smiles and a sparkle in the eyes - both are very, very comfortable with each other. You can tell from the story that Nessel obviously is proud of Alanna and wants people to understand their commitment. Alanna is her love, not a trophy wife like you usually see in GOP politics.

...for "moving past this issue" and accepting same-sex marriage or whatever the hell those idiotic claims were. Most of these Republicans never supported it. They never were in favor of it. They simply stopped complaining about it as much publicly once they realized a majority was okay with it. Republicans were the ones trying to enshrine discrimination against same-sex marriage in state constitutions just a couple of decades ago! They didn't move past it, they simply kept their feelings to themselves -- *grumble grumble cancel culture, grumble grumble everyone is too PC, blah blah* -- until they secured the power to do what they always wanted, and that is to relegate the LGBT community to permanent second class citizen status.

Good job to those useful idiots on the extreme left that didn't see this coming when they were warned about this sort of shit in 2016 as well.

is MAGA repub majority. Holding them back are our Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lt Govenor Garland Gilchrist, Secretary of State Joslyn Benson & Attorney General Dana Nessel. They are all Democrats & up for reelection. The Supreme Court is Dem controlled too. We have a petition drive to put on the November ballot overturning the 1931 law that would make abortion illegal if Roe is overturned. This has really fired up women & enlightened men. It should help in November.
