We're in a crappy place right now. The forces of patriarchal fascism are pushing hard to usurp human freedom with women as one of their main targets. There are many, many ways to fight back. One of them is to show our children that they do not have to accept the shackles of society's expectations.
I just finished watching "The Princess" on Hulu. It fucking rocks. I shared it with my 19 year old daughter. I bought her throwing knives for her 13th birthday. She's a gamer. She's awesome. She loved the movie. Only misogynists, conservatives, and fascists (but I repeat myself) believe women shouldn't be strong, confident, and powerful. I mean this from the bottom of my heart; "Fuck them". Society is more successful when women are not sidelined.
I highly recommend "The Princess" not merely because the protagonist is a bad-ass young lady, but because it's an awesome ride. Take it. Yes, many reviewers were 'upset' over a straightforward narrative with a 'girl' as the badass fighter because it was 'unoriginal'... because the same sort of plot always had men in the lead role. They derided it for being 'cheap' because of 'wokeness', but in their small dick energy it's pretty clear they don't get the greater point: we've seen nothing but badass male protagonists since movies existed. So let's catch that up, right?
There are SO many great books, movies, and media that bust the bullshit patriarchal paradigm. We need to make sure that our children, and in these times, especially our daughters, get the message: YOU can be powerful.
I'm also a big fan of "Gunpowder Milkshake".
Let's make this thread a LONG list of empowering, encouraging books and movies to make sure our children and grandchildren experience so that they go forth with confidence, courage, and hope into the world.

(39,484 posts)A Mighty Girl is the worlds largest collection of books, toys, movies, and music for parents, teachers, and others dedicated to raising smart, confident, and courageous girls and, of course, for girls themselves!
After years of seeking out empowering and inspirational books for our four young nieces, we decided to create A Mighty Girl as a resource site to help others equally interested in supporting and celebrating girls. The site was founded on the belief that all children should have the opportunity to read books, play with toys, listen to music, and watch movies that offer positive messages about girls and honor their diverse capabilities.
Girls do not have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress; they can be the leaders, the heroes, the champions that save the day, find the cure, and go on the adventure. It is our hope that these high-quality childrens products will help a new generation of girls to grow and pursue whatever dreams they choose -- to truly be Mighty Girls!

(12,904 posts)My grandmother took me to see the movie in the theater when it first came out.
As a young girl at the time, I found the character of Maddie Ross to be quite inspirational. She didnt take no shit off of any man. It was really unusual for the times, and I loved it!

(7,584 posts)I loved "Contact" with Jodie Foster. Not exactly an "action" movie, more cerebral, but then so am I. (gryn) I loved that it showed the heights of Science that women could attain.
Along the same lines, I fell in love with "Arrival" for much the same reasons. The lead protagonist was a female linguistic scientist, tasked with understanding the alien's language and in so doing, came to grok their understanding that time was not linear and what that meant for them, her, and the rest of us. An utterly amazing movie, IMO.
My husband, meantime, has two favorite movies to watch whenever they rerun on TV... Kill Bill and Lucy. I do like Lucy. Kill Bill, not so much. Strong female leads, to be sure. I'm just not much into the killing aspects.

Citizen Ruth is a bit too bothsider to me.
Ripley was a bad-ass! I remember the first time I saw it. I was so thrilled that she was the one who triumphed and there was not one scene where she was screaming and waiting for some man to rescue her!
