As Ohio restricts abortions, 10-year-old girl travels to Indiana for procedure

On Monday three days after the Supreme Court issued its groundbreaking decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist, took a call from a colleague, a child abuse doctor in Ohio.

Hours after the Supreme Court action, the Buckeye state had outlawed any abortion after six weeks. Now this doctor had a 10-year-old patient in the office who was six weeks and three days pregnant.

Could Bernard help?

Indiana lawmakers are poised to further restrict or ban abortion in mere weeks. The Indiana General Assembly will convene in a special session July 25 when it will discuss restrictions to abortion policy along with inflation relief.

But for now, the procedure still is legal in Indiana. And so the girl soon was on her way to Indiana to Bernard's care.

4. Would a child be eligible for use of mifepristone or another

effective abortifacient? I can't imagine having to need the surgical procedure (D&C) at age ten and how it could affect a little girl. And has Ohio found the rapist?

17. Mifepristone is good to 10 weeks & according to the article she was 6 weeks, three days?

But maybe because of her age they want to monitor her closely. And the dosage is by body weight so I assume the doctor wants to see her.

Mifepristone is also used for treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with Cushing's syndrome, including children, and at a higher dosage than is needed for an abortion so I'm guessing it may be a viable solution rather than a D & C, which can be pretty traumatic.

Various studies differ in the exact number, but in 3-7% of cases, mifepristone fails to abort the fetus and the woman requires a surgical abortion (usually suction curettage).

My Sister is a NP who works in a child abuse clinic. All across communities of America, pregnancies of young girls are not being exposed for fear of destroying the community - in many cases, their churches. Studies have proved that children are maturing far faster sexually than they did even 10-12 years ago. Last year, my Sister told me about a 10 year old girl who had been raped by her younger brother (He was 8.) and the family was destroyed, shattered. Mom and girl moved 800 miles away. Father and son stayed. Divorce followed. An entire family never healed. Counseling did not alleviate the pain and betrayal.

There's more to this than most people - who work outside of such medical/pediatric/abuse clinics - ever know. My Sister's patients cases continue to shock me.
