(16,971 posts)I rarely watched him but it seems like when I did he was in rare form.
The last I did watch was when he made his comments about thr Red Sox tribute to the Boston Marthon bombing victims during their World Series celebration parade. Fuck him. You couldn't pay me to watch the asshole.

(301 posts)Always watch his show. Don't always agree with him but I do most of the time. I don't rate a persons worth on some ridiculous purity standard wherein we must agree 100% of the time.
Some here don't like him because he will at times criticize certain trends on the left that he fears will cost us at the polls. You can get mad at him all you want but he is usually right on those topics.

(53,214 posts)I've have watched it from the beginning and Politically Incorrect before that. He still has some good moments, but he has changed a lot and not in a good way. His attacks on Democrats, President Biden, and the response to the pandemic have been over the top and often ill-informed. He'll take one personal pet peeve and repeat himself over and over again, like a dog with a bone. It is excruciating and sometimes embarrassing to watch.
I can handle not always agreeing with Maher. There have been many times where I disagreed with him in the past, but I respected his intelligence and insight. Not so much anymore.

Have no idea why I should despise and cover my ears in fear because I don't share exactly the same opinions with a talk show host, claim that even if I were stranded on a desert island and the only show available was "Real Time," I'd never in a million years pollute my sensitive ears with it, never ever ever.

Bill Maher says Dems could 'lose' abortion issue by using woke terms like 'birthing people' instead of women
https://www.foxnews.com/media/bill-maher-dems-could-lose-abortion-issue-woke-terms-birthing-people
There he goes using the term woke like a Republican but who seriously does this? I surfed at DU for years but never saw the term birthing people or in other left wing circles and never saw that. In fact if anything I was encouraged to use the term women from left wing circles rather than terms like chick or girls which is common from men.

(29,078 posts)Republicans did not make up the word "woke."
George Carlin made fun of politically correct language decades ago and comedians since, and "birthing people" is a new one.

(29,929 posts)WOKE WITH A HARD R: HOW THE RIGHT CREATED A NEW DOG WHISTLE
The word woke is now a funhouse version of itself a weaponized expression of winking anti-Blackness. How did we get here?
(Snip)
Part of its popularity was how it could mean so many different things. Typically, though, it was either an earnest expression that Black people need to stay conscious of the agendas operating against us; or by telling someone to stay woke, it became an inside joke of the culture, primarily existing online between Black people, or used as an easy roast of someone at the beauty parlor or barbershop.
Then, Ferguson happened. After Michael Browns murder, the BLM movement leapt into the national consciousness. With it came wokeness, a culture unto itself. Woke soon started to serve as a shorthand among people calling for the world to wake up to the systemic racism that was causing Black men and women to become hashtags at an alarming rate. Next, as often happens, white people seized on woke as a handy catchall. As such, woke morphed into an online signifier, but one generally used by young, well-meaning white people who were urging others to become aware of the racist agendas operating against Black life. Woke became a semi-hip racist critique.
Quickly, though, woke also became the opposite. It became a polite slur, a dog whistle used to mock anyone who dares to suggest that American history and culture is racist, and argues that life in America should radically change based on that understanding. This new cultural meaning for woke helps to explain why, when Senator Josh Hawley recently lost a big book deal, he didnt pause to reflect on the fact that hed incited a riot in the nations capitol that claimed five lives; instead, he blamed woke culture.
Woke is now a funhouse mirror version of itself. It no longer refers to being aware of the agendas that operate against Black people, nor does it mean to stay conscious and present, or even skeptical. Its been mockingly weaponized so that it can be an expression of winking anti-Blackness by someone like Hawley.
These days, woke functions a lot like when people say they hate disco. Theres a subtle, indirectness to it. Its a sly way to attack a much larger idea (in discos case, pro-Black and pro-gay agendas of self-respect). Wokeness signifies what side youre on. Being against wokeness marks that a person is against the recent advances of communities that have been historically kept from center stage.

There is a reason why I said he uses the term like a Republican.

Plenty of people discuss this. It's possible to use a word that Republicans have rebranded and not use it in the Republican way. But a person has to listen to these discussions.

(29,929 posts)Had that famous speech where she ripped Republicans for calling her a groomer and ripping things like CRT bans James Carville said this could solve Democrats wokeness problem. She was widely praised for showing righteous anger over Republican culture war fights but all she did was say what we were all thinking.
Before that he was forfeiting the issue to the GOP. Carville was also giving the GOP credit for fighting against cancel culture which isnt a real thing.
The fact that Carville and Franken say that is an example of why Republicans are effective at messaging because there are so many Democrats left or center willing to launder their talking points.

(35,075 posts)And I had friends and family members who watched him too. He has morphed into an angry asshole with a ton of grievances--and he lashes out more and more on his own viewers. Between the n-word fiasco, his constant attacks on Muslims, inviting offensive assholes on the show, and whining non-stop about college campuses, solar panels and/or how he's being persecuted in some way, his show is completely unwatchable. The last straw for me was when he said something along the lines of Americans have no right to complain about anything because we have it better than some people in other countries. And really, he seemed to be steering his comments towards black people. That was it for me. Done. Good luck to him but he seems to be getting a very aggressive case of dementia.

It's the hallmark of Libs to look inward to fix our effectiveness while wingnuts look outward for bogeymen to be afraid of and to blame.
Yes, those who knee-jerk shut down on him don't practice the open mind that is what we're about and are afraid of self criticism. We're not going to melt with water splashed on us like the Wicked Witch of the West.

(1,430 posts)Proof hes a jackass. Hes just like Hugh Hefner. They grew up in liberal areas (Chicago and New Jersey) so they couldnt just be an openly misogynist creep. They were closeted. Preferring a type of woman is the hallmark of jerk. Anyone whose mind so divides humans into 2 camps is messed up.
