Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI went off at Walgreens. It is getting impossible to
get anything done right.
My dog takes phenol barbitol . My vet writes a prescription for 2 bottles of 100 pills each. I buy 1 bottle at a time.
Walgreens never has enough so they always split it and give me enough for 1 month at a time. It costs me more.
The problem comes when I go to refill the 2nd half. Doing it the way they do runs the refill date out. And i have to get another prescription. It's a long weekend. My vet won't be in until Tuesday. This about the 4th t8me this has happened.
If they had filled it right there wouldn't be a problem. They just kept saying they couldn't do anything becayse it's a controlled substance. They couldn't even give me enough to make it through the weekend.
I had just had it. I just went off. Now I am probably the Karen of rhe day.
CVS ordered me a whole bottle . I have enough to stretch to Tuesday by giving the dog less wach time so hopefully we will make it.
No more Walgreens.
Everything has just gotten so damn difficult.

(26,014 posts)The first time, the pharmacy clerk suggested a prescription plan that would get me a lower price on a med not covered by my insurance. The price turned out to be higher than I had paid elsewhere, plus the cost of paying to get in the plan.
The second, and last time, was when they filled a prescription and the clerk asked if I was visiting friends or relatives in town. Seemed like a strange question to ask, but I said no, I don't have any relatives who live locally. She then asked if I was in town for a local tourist site. I said, "No, I live here." She asked when I had moved into the area. I said 30 years ago and finally realized that I should check the label. It had my first name (once common, but not any more) and my last name (a very common one), but a different middle initial and an address 4 states away from where I live.
I have never been back there.

If there is an issue with the prescription it's likely they talk to the pharmacists on duty.

I imagine they take a lot of heat over the controlled substances and all the rig a ma rol people have to go through. And all the people who get refused for the pain meds they need.
I never go off like that for myself but I will for my dog. Joey will start having siezures. And I will for all the animals I care for.

I hope things work out with the script.
I have the same thoughts a you. I find myself saying daily "everything is broken".
Things are so different now. Back in the early 80's, I asked a pharmacist friend for a mid-strength Valium because I had to go to a funeral for a friend who had committed suicide. and I was having break down a few hours before the funeral, but I needed to go to it. I would have never forgiven myself if I didn't go.
He gave me the Valium, and told me not to worry about it. No way would that happen these days.
Try to ration them out and do the best you can. Here's to hoping everything works out.

(20,005 posts)I noticed that she was really on edge yesterday. It's that whole awful SUPREME COURT thing. People are upset.
LuckyCharms
(22,648 posts)supreme court in general.
I'm going to freely admit that I do not know the human body as well as I should. I have a general idea how the female and male reproduction systems work. However, I have never taken a biology course, or a chemistry course.
My high school education consisted of 1/2 days general high school courses, and 1/2 days at a trade school.
My community college degree was in accounting.
My university degree was in accounting, with a minor in psychology.
All that being said, here's what I do know:
1) Pregnancy places incredible stress on a woman's body.
2) A very long list of things can go wrong during pregnancy.
3) Women own their bodies. Period.
4) Sex is a natural act.
5) Sex can result in an unwanted, or otherwise unfavorable pregnancy.
6) A cluster of developing cells is not a human being.
7) Birth defects are a thing.
8) Women are women. They are not vessels for another body unless they choose to be.
9) Women can die during pregnancy. So can a fetus.
10) The decision to have an abortion is not made lightly.
11) My wife miscarried a long time ago. We both grieved.
12) She needed a D&C after the miscarriage.
13) I remember the sadness in her eyes as I held her hand as they wheeled her into the OR.
I will try to convey the following without cursing.
Anyone who is not fully medically trained has no business making decisions about abortions. Certain supreme court justices need to rot in hell for eternity.
Abortion is not a legal issue.
Abortion is a medical issue.
Nobody but the woman in question has the final say about what she does with her body. Nobody but her. Period.
Not everyone is a Christian.
Being a "Christian" means different things to different people.
The Roe decision will have thousands of unintended consequences.
No medical considerations were addressed in the Roe decision. None.
The supreme court is not legitimate.
Next on their agenda might be gay marriage.
Sexuality is not a "choice", it is "who you are".
Who you are cannot be legislated.
Who you love is nobody's business.
The supreme court is playing god, loving every minute of it, for reasons that have nothing to do with the reasons that they are publicly stating.
I often wonder if my wife had miscarried today, and subsequently had a D & C, if some detective, some federal agent, would be questioning her.
All of these things are causing a deep dread with anyone who is paying attention. Both women and men. This impact cannot be overstated. The state of our nation is impacting everything we touch. It is affecting people mentally in ways we don't even understand yet.
And the supreme court, in concert with tfg, in concert with the rise of white supremacy, in concert with Covid, in concert with everything else that is going wrong, is literally breaking everything that has always worked well, and everything that we have always just assumed would continue to work well.

(30,058 posts)Drug seeking when I asked why the customer portal showed I filled a prescription for blood pressure meds and lidocaine cream. I hadn't filled either, I was out of blood pressure meds and I didn't have the lidocaine I was prescribed for my port to start my chemo. I asked to speak to the manager and she called me several nasty names then refused to get him. I entered the store and the manager refused to speak to me. The clerk said he didn't have time for a Karen and he'd just ban me instead.
I notified my insurance. They said they've had several complaints about Walgreens in multiple states the past year. They overturned Walgreens charges and helped me transfer my meds to a new pharmacy.

(35,176 posts)I have to take Ritalin for narcolepsy. For years I used Walgreens but every time I went in for my refill they had 20 or so less pills than I needed. You cannot come back in for those 20 pills later you can only get 80 pills now then you would have to get your doctor to write your next prescription earlier. With Ritalin that was next to impossible. If that happened now I could deal with it but back then I had little kids to drive around and a job. I could not just be falling asleep. I had to change so I went to CVS. They were farther away but I talked to them about it and ever since then they refill my prescription as soon as I fill it and hold it for me. Now, without needing to drive so much or do things that are not safe if you doze off, I do not need it as often but when I go in it is there waiting for me. See if you can work something like that out or change your pharmacy.

(37,848 posts)Years ago I had to get PB for my dog due to seizures. I actually had to get certified by the FDA to have it in the house. One of the requirements was I had to keep it in a safe.
The refills were provided by the veterinarian. He went back to a floor safe and dispensed me some from there after verification of my credentials.
Is it anything like that now? I never had a problem with refills, however.
leftyladyfrommo
(20,005 posts)the vets. They just write me a prescription.
I can get his pills from my vet on Tuesday if I have to. But they are so much more expensive.
I have noticed that my vets are being really helpful in finding cheaper drugs for their clients. Veterinarian care has gotten horribly expensive and my vets are doing everything they can to help clients save money.
Tree-Hugger
(3,379 posts)I started in vet med in 2000. Our controlled substances are kept in the double safe in the hospital. Only one person can have the keys at a time - only a veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician. Staff without either of those licenses cannot access the safe or dispense medications for it. There is an entire procession for logging dispensed meds as well as holding the keys. Combo codes are changed regularly and every time and employee stops working there. This regulation may vary in different states as not every state is rigid about certification/licensing of veterinary technicians. However, owners have never needed any certification nor have they been required to have a safe at home. Now, we give a big speech about locking up these drugs, but it is not a safe.

(37,848 posts)It sounds like the regs have loosened up on the consumer end or it is possible that due to the fact I lived in a rural area and had to have a larger quantity on hand I fell into a different category.
The dog was a wolf hybrid and had every conceivable malady including being bit by a rattlesnake. Which I opted to treat with the antivenin instead of a steroid like is sufficient for a normal dog. Luckily my intrepid vet had some on hand. Other than that bite was the source of the seizures is another story.

(12,582 posts)Cut their pharmacy hours down. Theyre only open M-F until 6pm, with a 1-2 lunch break, and closed on weekends. Ive been there several times lately when they didnt know when their computers would be back up so couldnt fill or pick up a filled script.
After major surgery the hospital sent the scripts to our preferred pharmacy. Got released from the hospital around 4pm. Drove to the pharmacy and were told theyd have to order the one med (Percocet). Thay said it had to be filled at a Walgreens since they had the script on the system and it was a controlled substance and couldnt be changed since they had already filled uncontrolled parts. Hubby ended up scrambling to drive a couple towns over to pick up the script before they closed. Thankfully that one wasnt on the same schedule as ours.
Was in the hospital a few weeks after that and told them about the problem with Walgreens. They told us they had a meds to beds program that we could use anytime I was in the hospital or ER.
Unfortunately our CVS doesnt seem much better. They had all their pharmacists walk out a few months ago.

(30,058 posts)Called me a drug seeker because I asked why the online portal showed my blood pressure med and my lidocaine cream for my port was filled when it hadn't been. She refused to let me speak with the pharmacist or store manager and called me several more names, saying she'd get me arrested and banned from the store. Yes, I tore into her after that because she had no right to call me a drug seeker, especially for those meds of all things.
I also turned that store over to my insurance, who showed it had been filled while I was in the ICU, though the tech claimed I picked it up. My insurance overrode the pharmacy charges and helped me transfer to a different pharmacy. They also said they've had calls about Walgreens in multiple states.

I bet that those drugs ended up on the black market.
MineralMan
(151,269 posts)So, the pharmacy has to take specific precautions to prevent it from hitting the black market. That's the source of your problem. It's not prescribed much for humans any longer, so most pharmacies either have just a small supply or don't stock it at all.
Talk to your vet about the problem and see if he or she has some suggestions for a pharmacy that is more likely to maintain a stock of it for veterinary prescriptions.
But, the person working the counter at the Walgreen's prescription area can't change anything for you. So, losing it at the counter won't help your situation much, I'm afraid. Again, talk to your vet about the issue. You should get some suggestions that way.

(33,349 posts)in your state, call them and ask what pharmacy they work with for dispensing meds for humans that aren't handled by veterinary practices.
Once you get the name of that pharmacy, call them. They probably will also overnight mail requiring a signature.
