I wanted to post a thread that would reflect our support for the women in our world.
I'm not going to spend a lot of time waxing philosophicaly...there's no point.
Ladies...
We have your back.

The least we can do is be there for them when Gilead Council types try to trip them up.

(5,932 posts)Men certainly have a fundamental duty to ensure that they make no one pregnant who doesn't wish to be. Vasectomy is one tool to help fulfill that duty, but there are others. Some of them involve forethought, self-denial, or self-restraint.
But ensuring against unwanted pregnancy is only part of the picture. Men have a duty to support women's control of their bodies in pregnancy. Not all women who contemplate ending a pregnancy have become pregnant unintentionally or unwillingly. What use or consolation is my vasectomy to those women and girls everywhere?
Beyond that, women also have a right to be free of the fear of someday having no say in a pregnancy. Men have a duty to help create a world in which women feel secure in the knowledge that they'll always be in charge of their bodies.
Women's rights regarding pregnancy are, in turn, just a small part of the overall picture. Their most basic and fundamental human rights, too numerous to mention here, seem to be perpetually threatened or endangered if not outright denied. Those rights must be strengthened, protected, and preserved.
When we answer this thread's OP by saying, "Ladies, we have your back", then we need be committing to all of the above-mentioned support, and more. Vasectomy is easy, but vasectomy doth not an ally make. We don't necessarily have to be sterile to be allies, but we must in all ways be committed to fully taking on the duties I've outlined here.
Geechie
(865 posts)But thanks for taking that step - along with everything else you mention. Ive heard lots of virtue signaling among the DUdes, but if they havent taken that one simple (and reversible) step, I figure theyre not really committed.
Rural_Progressive
(1,105 posts)considering that I've had a couple. Doesn't mean you're permanently sterile, I have a 34 year old daughter who can attest to that. What it does mean in my case is that I took my reproductive decision making seriously and didn't expect either my ex or my dear wife to have to shoulder the load.
As they say, talk's cheap. Unless a man wants a child, if he's sexually active there's a really easy way to make sure you're not putting the load on any of the women you spend time with. Of all birth control methods except the condom vasectomy is the least invasive and least dangerous of them all.
Try it, you'll like it. Three of the best decisions I've made in my life.
Geechie
(865 posts)who believe in choice & havent drunk the koolaid,
THANK YOU!
Rural_Progressive
(1,105 posts)but on those decisions I nailed it.
You are welcome. In the past 34 years since I had my second one I have spread the word. Happy to say I've had a few successes so I'm happy to accept your thanks.
Only problem is unless we all have a choice and control then none of us do. Women have terminated pregnancies since pretty much forever, that's not going to change. What has changed is the loss of access to safe and legal abortions and until that is reversed men who truly love and respect women have their work cut out for them.
You hang in their Geechie, I was born during a time when legal abortions weren't available, I have no intention of dying until women regain their personal autonomy and the right to decide what they chose to do with their bodies.

(10,828 posts)I try to remember and voice the fact that this fight for reproductive freedom is for women and the men who love and respect them. Reproductive rights are family rights, human rights. The recent Roe reversal affects us all.
So, thank you for the public statement. My husband and sons are on board as well.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)My ability to do more is rather limited.
I live in Jacksonville, FL and have a spare room, so I would love to be able to offer it to any woman who might find the need in the future to travel north on I-95 for a legal abortion and require a nights layover, but Im a single, old man who travels extensively, so there is really no way to open my home to any women who might need a clean, safe bed to sleep in while they journey north, should Governor Ron DeathSentence have his way.
I wish I could do more, truly.

(13,180 posts)We shouldn't forget that. We're in support roles for women, who bear the brunt of the Supreme Court's taking of freedom. But our freedoms as men are also taken away by Roe v. Wade being overturned. Forced motherhood is forced fatherhood and forced grandparenthood. As Buttigieg so skillfully pointed out recently, the Republican Party is doling out family tragedy.

(3,622 posts)Today I turned down a donation to the fire department "something" fund.
I declined and informed the solicitor that all future miscellaneous donations were now going to be donated to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood joins Doctors Without Borders and the Smile Train as my contributions making this s better world.
On a practical front. I'll continue to vote, demonstrate and do whatever I can to ensure that women eventually get the respect and rights they deserve and are entitled to.

(512 posts)single issue voters on abortion rights, we have a chance. The beauty of it is, voting pro-choice is pro-privacy as well. Or should be. So thanks to all the men who will stand with women.
