Trophy hunter who killed lions and elephants is shot dead by robbers who ambushed him when his truck broke down in South Africa

A prolific trophy hunter who slaughtered lions, giraffes and elephants in South Africa has been shot dead at point blank range after his truck broke down.

Riaan Naude, 55, ran the company Pro Hunt Africa which boasts of its 'eco-hunting' while sharing gruesome pictures of dead endangered animals.

He was found dead next to his Toyota in Limpopo after pulling it to the side of the road when it overheated.

Yeah... Catch the robbers but... I'm still going to look at this as a feel good story of the day.

From your point of view he was a bad person because he was a trophy hunter (a legal occupation but one I despise BTW) and his death is simply karma.

My view is his death had nothing at all to do with his job, or any measure of "goodness". He was the victim of a crime and was murdered so i condemn it.

Let's apply this to Chicago-
Currently 6 deaths are reported. Under one of our viewpoints if it is found two of the were wife beaters, one sold illegal drugs, one a child molester and another a person carrying a licensed concealed weapon (which is worse than a criminal in some eyes) we could have a mass "feel good" story of "bad people" facing karmic death, with a couple unfortunate deaths.

In the other viewpoint is is a mass murder.

Right wing propaganda uses "Chicago" as a dogwhistle, like it's the most terrifying city on earth. If you repeat that, you're doing Fox News' work for them.

If you're referring to Highland Park, it's almost 30 miles north of Chicago, and it is a VERY BLUE affluent suburb. The shooter is FROM THERE, his father ran for mayor of the town on a MAGA platform and lost. Highland Park is very rich and very white. As is the shooter. You're bringing a lot of fucked up stereotypes of what you think "Chicago people" are like. I mean, being white and wealthy doesn't mean you can't be a child molester or a drug dealer, but COME ON. If you don't know the area, don't use it as a gotcha.

I think hunting endangered species for sport should be a felony everywhere in the world. Unfortunately, it isn't. When the elephants are gone, they can't be brought back, but there will never be a shortage of shitty humans willing to kill for money. I won't mourn the loss of one of the latter.

However at the time I posted it was "Chicago" or "a Chicago suburb" in the news. I have no problem at all with the city of Chicago. I used to visit relatives there annually before they passed away. Enjoyed the city without fear even though one live on the Gold Coast and the other in a neighborhood it was recommended you don't walk alone in the daytime.

I find it ironic that you accuse me of repeating dog whistles. Yet your condemning my "stereotypes" is to dismiss the likelihood of a Highland Park resident being a drug dealer or child molester because the area is: very blue, affluent, a suburb, very rich, very white, white, wealthy. There is a biblical verse about seeing a speck in another's eye.

Yet I said nothing about "Chicago people"; I used hypotheticals to make a point. One that no one has actually addressed.

You missed where I indicated I despise trophy hunting. IMO opinion killing an animal for no reason except personal gratification is barbaric. Worse as a barbarian would eat the animal.

I must, however, acknowledge the reality that trophy hunting is not illegal. Nor is it illegal to hunt endangered species as long as the proper permits are obtained and laws followed. I have not researched him at all, have you seen any report that he was a criminal or bribed authorities? (Full disclosure-it would not change my opinion if he were a criminal.)

Rest assured I have been educated. Many believe murder is permissible, even to be celebrated in certain cases. I am of the quaint notion that all humans have value.

It is my belief that a person is "bad" (meaning criminal) they should face justice under the law, not summary execution. If the person is "bad" because I do not like what they do for a living but it is legal, I just have to live with that.

People may think ill of me but I am going to maintain my ethical standards.

Do people get all upset with Armies killing other Armies? Russia is murdering Ukraine citizens right now and most of the world is letting them.

Then you can go on and list all the slaughter houses throughout the country killing tons of animals everyday. No one really cares about them. Not that I think if done humanely it is bad to cull farm animals but it doesn't seem to worry too many people.

Then there are all the death row inmates the US murders regularly.

So, yeah it is all about the victims. School children, church attendees, concert goers, shoppers and parade observers are innocent bystanders. Wild endangered species don't normally feed the hungry after they are slaughtered and they are not killed for food normally.

This dude was probably as evil as the criminals who murdered him. So, yeah, it's all about the victim.

I was hoping as well. Him and his sick brother Eric get their rocks off hiring hunting guides like the dude featured in this post. What is it with these wealthy white guys, typical members of the Dallas Safari Club who enjoy killing iconic, in many cases threatened, and beautiful animals?

Don Jr even went so far to pressure the leader of a country near China, maybe Nepal to allow him to kill an endangered species antelope just so the low life Don Jr. could have bragging rights with fellow members at the safari club. I have no doubt he probably sold the tusks of the elephant he murdered to poachers too. He then arranged to have the leader of the country where he killed the antelope to visit him and his old man at the White House. By the way, Trump Senior reversed the Obama directive that made it illegal to import body parts of animals that were killed by psycho hunters on foreign soil, mainly Africa. Don Jr. and brother Eric come from the same entitled profile of hobby animal killers like that American dentist who was obsessed with killing various animal species worldwide.

He was the one who baited a well known and collared lion and lured him outside a conservation zone, I think the lion's name was Cecil? He then posted a photo of him over the now dead lion after tracking him down, the lion was wounded by the dentist's arrow and tried his best to evade the fuck head, but was too weak from blood loss and eventually, the sick ass dentist caught up with him and killed him. Just like many photos of other so-called trophy hunters, the killer had this evil grin on his face. I'm glad as hell the person was executed. He deserved it and so do others like him.

Was this a robbery, or something else? The article says the assailants took a pistol, but how would the authorities know that unless the shooters were caught?

And if it was a robbery, why would they take one pistol and leave two rifles?

It looks like a crime of opportunity in the sense that the victim’s truck broke down. But he wasn’t robbed of his most valuable possessions, just killed. I wonder if the killers knew him, and took the opportunity to rid the area of a scourge?

Very strange incident.

His truck breaking down is sheer happenstance. Then some guys (I guess) come along, don't help but shoot him in the head and drive away taking nothing of value that I've read. Those rifles they left behind don't come cheap. Big caliber hunting rifles used for dangerous African game don't come from Walmart. They likely cost 1,2,3 thousand apiece.

This is, indeed, a very strange incident. In any case, he was killing animals for fun, absolutely no other rationale. Fuck him. I'm glad somebody killed him.

Tue Jul 5, 2022, 10:31 AM

. . . it's also here at home.

I was born and reared in one of the states of the deep Cotton South. My G-G-grandparents, their ancestors and siblings were plantation owners in two states where their 40,000 acres produced cotton and sugar cane along with enslaving almost 300 people. During the unpleasantness of the 1860's the damnyankees burned us out, leaving us penniless.

About 20 years ago, the last 800 acres remaining in my family was sold by a distant cousin to a wealthy Texas couple who established a "hunting preserve." They import young trophy animals from Africa along with North American animals not native to the South (big-horned sheep). The animals are kept on the 800 acre preserve by a system of fences and food lots.

"Hunters" pay a handsome fee to come to this preserve where they place an order for what they want to shoot -- you want a couple of gazelles, a zebra, and a water buffalo, just pony up a few thousand $$$, you get luxury accommodations, chef-prepared meals, ride in luxury pickup or SUV to a stand where you shoot what you paid for.

I visited the place about 10 years ago because there is an old family cemetery on the property that we refurbished and fenced. The couple who own this place are pleasant folks, they maintain the old cemetery, but after learning about their "preserve," I will not return.
