In many states abortion laws area MUCH more liberal than in France, where only in the last year could a woman even get an abortion between 12-14 weeks on demand, even today you still need two seperate doctors to sign off on a medical necessity (aka life of mother) for abortion if past that point.

Quite a few years ago Texas closed every women’s clinic but one in the state, and their maternal mortality rate soared to that of a third world nation.

Trigger Laws:
Many states have very old laws on the books that were never amended in any way after Roe was passed, and they will come back in full force. Many other states passed laws in recent years that they knew were not going to be in effect until and unless the Supreme Court overturned Roe — and now they have.

The legislators in those states are not kidding when they say No Exceptions. Texas passed a bounty law. Others, when pressed, are absolutely sure forcing a 10-year old’s body to give birth is “God’s gift.”

Try being a poor woman deep in Red State USA. How are you going to get from there to a Free State and back again without anybody noticing? With what money, childcare, transportation, ducking of an abusive spouse or nosy neighbors, time off work? Try being an abused and raped child, for that matter.

Frankly, I don’t care about France at this point except in the abstract. We deserve the cartoonist’s scorn. We should be ashamed.
