but most people live near cities or ports not on the frontier. Those weapons were more for hunting or protection in remote territory. The average colonist didn't have weapons, the communities did in their local armories. Mostly it was the Kings.

The army was formed out of the militias, and the skirmishes and raids by the militias bought the time needed to organize the army.

Also, the logistics issues and steady losses inflicted by militias and other irregulars weakened the British forces. Without that possibility of victory, France wouldn't have intervened.
