(32,589 posts)Does that mean they were homemade, or what? There are plenty of ways to buy inexpensive, legal fireworks and those are pretty safe when they're handled correctly. Why would someone risk their life and safety by using illegal fireworks?

(64,854 posts)Even in states where fireworks are legal, cherry bombs, M80s, or mortars over 1.5" are still illegal, because the weight of the explosive agent is above the limit.
These may have been 4 inch or larger mortar launched devices, which are WAY more powerful than the backyard stuff sold along the interstate. These aren't things amateurs should be messing with.
