(4,575 posts)Was he a minor? These laws only work if people or LE actually petition the court for the restraining order. I haven't seen any stats on these laws but it sure doesn't seem like they are effective. It seems like all of the recent shootings have had a shooter who was known to LE for some sort of incident that should have precluded them from purchasing a weapon.

(9,998 posts)Personally, I don't think it will EVER change. At least not in my lifetime, and I'm 56 years old.
I already know at least 3 friends who are willing to entertain the idea of leaving America, and going to a country where they actually value human "non-fetus" life.
I expect that most SC rulings on major issues, will go in a Conservative direction, for at least a couple of decades. It may take that long before Democrats have a shot at the majority.

And if this court is allowed a couple of decades to do it's thing, there won't be any democratic institutions left to allow anyone to vote us back into power.
i feel as hopeless as you do, but the solution has to be here and now and we have to find it.
The Republicans are playing hardball and we must too. No more of this moderate stuff. Lets start by taking back the SC.

(9,090 posts)people giving up while ignoring rw radio is ridiculous
we let a few hundred lying asshole limbaugh wannabes blast the country from 1500 unchallenged radio stations all day and then complain that dems can't message or their reps don't try hard enough, it's all over......
NYT yesterday wrote about rw radio finally - https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/05/business/media/conservative-radio-democrats-cheat.html (i think there's a paywall) and ari melber's fill in was going to talk about it yesterday but of course it got bumped by a chicago shooting update!
there is no fucking excuse for americans not to complain to these 87 universities and dozens of pro sports teams for supporting rw radio with sports. that includes Syracuse Uni (150 miles from buffalo) supporting 6 ex-limbaugh and 3 other RW stations making excuses for assault weapons and selling replacement theory!
there is no fucking excuse for media companies, political sci departments, and the dem party not to be using AI to digitize and monitor RW radio
meanwhile people give up and trolls stimulate more giving up

It's really impossible for honest politicians to counter this when we aren't even having the same conversation.
Gullible people are being scammed, and the rest of the world is victim to it.
I wasn't aware of the angle of Pro Sports and Universities. We need to take the attitude we did when boycotting anything to do with Apartheid South Africa.

(9,090 posts)starting to get into that discussion but i'm not sure.
i called there a couple of times and it's summer school. first time i called someone was very interested and wanted me to email it. second time i called another office and that person said there was some diosscussion of it. problem is it might just end up referred to the athletics dept and they say we can't do anything.... etc.....
i know the university of colorado was getting low level complaining for years for broadcasting on the major Limbaugh station in denver. eventually the station, which had already switched a lot of time to the major denver sports teams, moved limbaugh to a smaller station. maybe they wanted to avoid a public discussion that would have gotten pro athletes involved.
getting local student groups involved might help, or the student debate societies etc

(1,323 posts)(or really any person in their 20's) is to get the hell out of Dodge. Leave this country now. Easier said than done, but make it a goal. This country is going to be horrible for a long time to come, until all the living republicans in government now are dead at least, if not beyond. Leaving won't save them from the climate crisis, which I think will be worse than what anyone expects, but at least they will have rights and not be in a dictatorship for as long as the planet is inhabitable. I'd say maybe the Netherlands, or possibly New Zealand. Just get out of America. This country is doomed. I'm so glad I will be long gone when it manages to totally destroy itself. I hate this country.

(82,849 posts)When they start losing their campaigns for re-election, and their advisors tell them it's because of their laissez-faire attitude to regulating firearms, change might start taking shape.
As it is, there are millions of voters out there whose single issue is free and unfettered access to firearms. And they vote. Every election, every time. They vote out the gun grabbers. They vote out the reasonable centrists. If there's a choice between a blood-gargling psychopath and a squish, they'll vote for the psychopath every time. Look at the Republican primaries: NOBODY in any of those races gives the voters anything beyond full-throated endorsement of firearms and their miraculous ability redeem any situation, solve any problem.
When those guys start losing, something might change. Do we have our people's backs when it comes to firearm regulation? Our candidates don't think so: Listen to them talk firearms after something like this. They always - ALWAYS - have to make an obeisance to the NRA and its murderous policies, to be sure that the worst excesses of the proliferation of firearms continue. Our candidates aren't dummies. We have to prove to them that firearm regulation is not just good policy, but winning policy.
I don't want to hear mealy-mouthed nonsense about hunting rifles or whatever. But until Democrats talk a good game and deliver a better one for firearm regulation, they'll do that only when we back them to the hilt and deliver the message to the NRA that we aren't going to be held hostage by them anymore.
We're going to lose elections pursuing this goal. We're going to have Supreme Court decisions go against us. And we're going to have to slog on, impervious to defeat. As the forced birth people showed, nothing is permanently decided. We lose only when we give up, not when we lose an election.

(100,063 posts)So many people I know are brainwashed by Fox News and AM radio because that's all they listen to. I think if we want to start changing minds we really need to up the propaganda game against them. Hell, even some of my friends who I once knew to be liberal have fallen under the spell of Fox's siren song and flipped to the side of batshit crazy and have never come back from it.
It's pretty simple - he controls the message controls the election. As long as conservative propaganda rules the airwaves, they will win every time. If we want to take back this country, we're going to need to do some serious cult deprogramming on a national level.
MadameButterfly
(1,052 posts)at this point. Republicans won't be giving up power once they have it. if Supreme Court rules state legislatures can control elections without court interference, pretty much Republicans will win.
Maybe in a few generations of misery the dictatorship would fall. I'd rather focus on what the hell we do about this impending court ruling, pack the court, put the crooks in jail, save our democracy now. It will be a hard enough slog to create majority rule even then.
With majority rule, we win, and the gun nuts lose.

We have to suck it up and learn to deal with it. It's hard to predict where this will go after 2024, maybe it will take some level of civil war. But we have to do what is needed to protect our families and our children.
In a way we've been spoiled here in the USA. While the rest of the world is used to war and oppression, we've been living a fairy tale existence. In many ways that led to the apathy that has led to the situation we have today. We took our rights and freedoms for granted. And now, we are paying the price.
Human beings aren't the brightest animals on the planet. Just watch us repeat history again and again.

(768 posts)The Left has meekly and passively knelt before every attack that the Fascists have launched against us. Obama was smart enough to know where this was going, he had the opportunity to take a hard line against the expansion of the Radical Right but he didn't. We all HOPED it was going to turn out ok. Reality is HOPE does not win wars. And we are at war, we have been for decades now.
I don't see the young people of this country rising up in arms once they go under the boot in 2024 or 2028. Unfortunately I see them meekly accepting their fate. I hope I'm wrong.

(100,063 posts)There was a huge Roe V Wade protest with like thousands of people. I mean the march went for miles. I hope it's a sign that people won't be sitting on their asses when the election comes. We need to get our people out there.
But as I said the reason why the right wins is that they are good at messaging. He who controls the message controls the outcome of elections. Every time. If we want to beat them, we have got to up our propaganda game. Right now, Fox News, AM talk radio, Sinclair Broadcasting, and internet propaganda like Infowars have an iron grip on half the country. I love what Gavin Newsom is doing in Florida and Texas. I hope to see more of this!

Its time to force America to SEE and LOOK UPON what we have allowed to come to pass. No more excuses, no more bullshit about "rights" or "self-protection". And now it's being revealed that many of these terrorists were active in the planning and execution of the coup, including a sitting SCOTUS judge's wife. It's no mystery where the GOP's head's are at.
We need to quit deluding ourselves that these scumbags are going to play by any rules whatsoever. Any Republican who's not a brainwashed MAGA Monster has either fled, has one foot out the door or is persona non grata in the GOP. And we also now have a full generation of minions who were raised on Fox and hate radio propaganda. With easy access to military grade weapons. Now codified by a thoroughly corrupted SCOTUS. Legally.
We'd better start using our "legal" options and forget what these fascists will think of it. Start with putting expansion of the SCOTUS "on the table" again.

The toddler survived the massacre unharmed, but he is "left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents," according to an online fundraiser.
The parents of the 2-year-old boy found in the chaotic aftermath of the Highland Park parade shooting were identified Tuesday as Kevin and Irina McCarthy.
The boy, Aiden, was unharmed in the massacre, according to a fundraiser verified by GoFundMe. He will be cared for by family members.
"Aiden is left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents," the page says. "He will have a long road ahead to heal, find stability, and ultimately navigate life as an orphan. He is surrounded by a community of friends and extended family that will embrace him with love, and any means available to ensure he has everything he needs as he grows."
Irina McCarthy's father, Michael Levberg, told the Chicago Sun-Times that Kevin died protecting his son.
"He had Aiden under his body when he was shot," Levberg told the newspaper. Hours later, when Levberg picked up Aiden at the Highland Park police station, the little boy told him: "Mommy and Daddy are coming soon."
