The GOP appears to be aligning itself with Orban and quietly embracing the nationalism.

I mean, you can use "MAGA" (insert Austria) and won't even need new apparel/bling. Putin and Belarus leader pushing the "cleansing Europe" ideology as well. Sure most Goopers would support them as well. Any thoughts on this progression toward "authoritarianism" ie. actively embracing these folks?

Disgusts the hell out of me and it looks as if there is a fair amount of traction. The Bannon and Carlson types have been on it for years at this point. You know the Orange One wants it bad.

Basically zero chance atm the Austrians would sign onto this Hungarian madness of Orbán. The Greens are in the ruling Government with ÖVP.

The Nehammer government (German: Bundesregierung Nehammer) was sworn in as 35th Government of Austria on 6 December 2021.

snip

Jörg Haider (who would have perhaps been open to such shite) died in 2008, and his party when he was at his peak (FPÖ, Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs ie The Freedom Party of Austria) is currently in a state of relative weakness, especially after being ensnared in a huge political scandal, The Ibiza Affair (see below)..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Party_of_Austria

Jörg Haider became leader of the party in 1986, after which it began an ideological turn towards right-wing populism. This resulted in a strong surge in electoral support, but also led the SPÖ to break ties, and a splinter in the form of the Liberal Forum in 1993. In the 1999 election, the FPÖ won 26.9% of the vote, becoming the second most popular party, ahead of the ÖVP by around 500 votes. The two parties eventually reached a coalition agreement in which ÖVP retained the office of Chancellor. The FPÖ soon lost most of its popularity, falling to 10% in the 2002 election, but the government was renewed. Internal tensions led Haider and much of the party leadership to leave in 2005, forming the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ), which replaced the FPÖ as governing partner.

Ibiza affair

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibiza_affair

The Ibiza affair (German: Ibiza-Affäre), also known as Ibiza-gate, was a political scandal in Austria involving Heinz-Christian Strache, the former vice chancellor of Austria and leader of the Freedom Party (FPÖ), and Johann Gudenus, a deputy leader of the Freedom Party.

The scandal was triggered on 17 May 2019 by the publication of a secretly recorded video, which was commissioned by Iranian-born lawyer Ramin Mirfakhrai, of a meeting in Ibiza, Spain in July 2017, which appears to show the then opposition politicians Strache and Gudenus discussing their party's underhanded practices and intentions. In the video, both politicians appeared receptive to proposals by a woman calling herself Alyona Makarova, who was posing as a niece of Russian businessman Igor Makarov, discussing providing the FPÖ with positive news coverage in return for government contracts. Strache and Gudenus also hinted at corrupt political practices involving other wealthy donors to the FPÖ in Europe and elsewhere.

The scandal caused the collapse of the Austrian governing coalition on 18 May 2019 and the announcement of an early election. In a no-confidence vote on 27 May, Sebastian Kurz was voted out of office as Austrian chancellor by Parliament, and on 28 May a caretaker government was appointed. Elections were set for 29 September. In 2020, a partial transcript of the video was published by the public prosecutor's office. In the new material, Strache had refused the decoy's offer and doing anything illegal.

because currently, I don't think any of my acquaintances, co-workers, friends, family or even elected Congress Critters, have a fucking clue. Perhaps an op-ed in a major publication/ media outlet?? Seriously. The information needs to start smacking folks in the head. We are far down a road my Dad and relatives laid their lives on the line for. They fought fascism. Now it isn't even talked about in most MSM shows, and that is the best people are capable of digesting (if that). If you're getting it from InfoWars, Q, AlterNet etc. you're already brainwashed. It is working and we need to sound alarms.

years ago. It only existed for 51 years, 1867 to 1918.

It was staggeringly complex, with 14 official languages (Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Ruthenian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Ukrainian and Turkish), and over 1,000 dialects and sub-dialects spoken inside its maximal borders.

It only had two emperors the entire time (almost just one)

Emperor-King

• 1867–1916
Franz Joseph I

• 1916–1918
Karl I & IV

His Imperial and Apostolic Majesty,
Franz Joseph I,

By the Grace of God,
Emperor of Austria,
King of Hungary and Bohemia,

King [of Lombardy and Venice,] of Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Lodomeria and Illyria; King of Jerusalem etc., Archduke of Austria; Grand Duke of Tuscany and Cracow, Duke of Lorraine, of Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola and of the Bukovina; Grand Prince of Transylvania; Margrave of Moravia; Duke of Upper and Lower Silesia, of Modena, Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, of Auschwitz [Oświęcim] and Zator, of Teschen [Cieszyn/Těšín], Friuli, Ragusa [Dubrovnik] and Zara [Zadar]; Princely Count of Habsburg and Tyrol, of Kyburg, Gorizia and Gradisca; Prince of Trent [Trento] and Brixen [Bressanone]; Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia and in Istria; Count of Hohenems, Feldkirch, Bregenz, Sonnenberg, etc.; Lord of Trieste, of Cattaro [Kotor], and in the Wendish Mark; Grand Voivode of the Voivodina of Serbia etc. etc.

The GOP is openly embracing the likes of Orban using the man's illiberal, nationalistic capture of Hungary as a model. The CPAC conference was held in Budapest where Orban, another demogogue, was swooned over.

The GOP and current crop of 'conservatives' are leaving nothing to speculation. They are out there banging the drum for a white, Christian national movement, gathering examples and allies around the world. Orban is a particularly beloved figure because he pretends to run a democratic state in Europe while espousing bigotry and touching all the universal themes of the Trumpists: gender, critical race theory, cancel culture, wokeness, censorship of right-wing ideology (hate) on social platforms.

This is where the Republicans want to go: the melding of state, corporate and church authority to whip the populace into compliance. Orban is the number one guy for mega-inspiration, and even he has said that the elections in 2024 (prefaced by 2022) will be critical in establishing the takeover.

The movement is real, threatening and gaining steam at an alarming rate.
